When searching though I am a money minnow fan. I use 40-80# braid line. I find the spinners, cranks, and other norms do not produce like soft jerkbaits. The rig is mainly a school?suspending technique. I only use it when the field is showing that is worth throwing. Im old school. And low tech. I go where they live, deep in cover and go old school. |

Quoting: simultaneous_final When fishing smallmouth on the river, I try to bait the water with some corn near the bank until I see the bass swarm. I use either corn, crickets or powerbait. Sometimes nightcrawlers. They eat everything off the hook like real pros. What to do? This one is sorta funny. Depending on State baiting fish may be illegal. Check the regs. But to me, baiting fish isn't sporting, and i wouldn't learn a whole lot from that experience. In the river Id be throwing small mepps lures that have trouble hooks attached. Try small crankbaits, an topwater popping baits. When smallmouth decide to strike these lures you will 90% of the time hook those aggressive fish. Professional Fisherman: you are not. Been fishing bass tourneys for 35 years and a mepps is a low ratio hooking power type of lure because of the small treble hooks associated with the bait. 50% hooking ratio is more like it. Quoting: Waterbug We only have one real lake.. Reelfoot, and I don't get to fish there.. I'd like to. I fish Old Hickory and the Cumberland River. Fish the warm water discharge just up from skippers launch. Actually right now you can go up there and catch 30-40 a day with spinnerbaits, topwater, and plastics. The bays should be warming on nice warm days. The sun is staying out longer and the bass will start moving up. The fish around the discharge and mouth of will run small, but you'll find some quality from time to time. Look for the dropoff just outside that island in front of the mouth discharge. Follow the channel leading into it. |

It seems like the fish are non existent in the winter. Quoting: #Geomagnetic_Storm# Float n Fly I'm a noob fisherman. What exactly is that? Good cold water tactic. Often used in the South during these months. Smallmouth love it. Its bobbber fishing. Put a trout fly or a like and add a slip float so you can adjust to where the fish are suspending. A drop shot rig is also your friend this time of year. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 24608786 United States 02/07/2013 12:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's probably the only way I could ever catch a bass. They're sneaky little critters. Every time I've tried, I've just had my bait nibbled away. Guess an artificial frog would be somewhat better, at least it couldn't be nibbled. The key to catching bass to aggitate them to the point that they have to attack. Also putting your lure where others dont bother casting to, and a frog does that job. Im not looking for hungry fish. Im looking for aggressive fish that will strike a lure hard which allows for a good hook up. |

Thanks Anytime the water is on an upward trend, water temp wise, start fishing your moving lures. Even if the water is a cold 45 degrees. When temps are falling you have to slow down, even in 70 degree water. Suspending hard jerk baits come into play the best when temps are rising in the late winter to early spring. |

I will just fast idle around looking for shade, cover, current, and the edges of tree tops that extend out towards the channel. Fish banks that the channel bumps up to and look for the nooks and crannies. It's those little spots that can hold what your after. Pause that frog over water up to 10 ft even. The bass will chase far a dead frog. |
