I just couldn't bring myself to throw my leg over and crawl onto roof.

At least with A Frame you can scoot your butt on there.
 Quoting: Astral Goat

Actually I believe that is worse to do that on a a frame. so easy to tip those over vs a extension that is on solid ground and leaning up against a solid object.

I am a window cleaner btw and had many a frames want to tip over.

I agree I don't feel comfortable on a-frames even at 8 feet. It always feels like they're swaying underneath me.

You can get a U-shaped attachment that bolts on the top of the extension ladder and that rests on the roof surface.
It's much safer that way! It keeps the ladder from sliding sideways.

Would they have that at HD?

Home Depot or Lowes will have them where the ladders are. I think it's called a spreader bar?

I've been in roofing and construction for over 20 years, you newbies need to extend your ladder 3 feet above the roof edge for a good handhold going up or down, if you have gutters, tie the ladder to the gutter hangers with a bungee cord to stabilize it, A-frame step ladders can get you killed or injured if not on stable ground, if you have to use one, have someone hold it stable for you when you go on it.

Yes, it's called a spreader bar I think. About 3 feet long.

It's called a standoff, and they really work well at keeping the ladder from sliding around.

Re: Pussed out climbing onto roof with extension ladder... : (
climb it higher up so you do not have to step up to the roof. Try to get your feet level with the edge of the roof then confidently take one step then another onto the roof keep going up to ensure you are on. When going down slowly work your way down the roof to the ladder, when you approach the ladder extend a hand to gently stable yourself. Then in one motion step onto the same rung you stepped onto the roof from while turning to face ladder then proceed down the ladder.

I do it this way all the time and the higher you get on the ladder the better. Just don't get both feet above the roof line and lean into the ladder with a lot of weight.

I just sat there at the top for a while trying to become one with the ladder.
 Quoting: Astral Goat

lolyeah, it's about weight distribution too, my ladder is too short (this is an unusually high roof) so I'm real careful about weight placement, lean in to the ladder, not out.

If this is cleaning the gutters OP, it's better to do it staying on the ladder and just move the ladder along. You can't look down much from the ladder but you have to look down constantly to clean the gutters while sitting on the roof. SCAWY.

So I have been climbing onto roof with A-Frame ladder and I'm fine!

Haven't fallen off it and it is completely stable!

What do you have to say now?

Maybe if you are having such a problem with a ladder, you might want to re think even being on the roof in the first place.....???

Try climbing a 50' Bangor Ladder with 60lbs of gear on lol. That will crush your fear of a 22 footer.

You won't fall off the ladder if you eat a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal. Lucky Charms also cured the gangrene in my leg and cured my chronic diarrhea.

This ladder is 16 feet.

And no wobbles.

I was able to apply some cement around chimney with this ladder and run an antenna line.
