is a writer, classical guitarist and inveterate traveler, whose work explores the crossing of frontiers into other cultures and states of consciousness. He is the author of two books on shamanism, The Jaguar that Roams the Mind and The Shamanic Odyssey: Homer, Tolkien, and the Visionary Experience, along with numerous articles on themes such as pilgrimage along the Camino to Santiago, the medieval quest, the Native American prophetic tradition, and the healing practices of the vegetalista tradition of the Amazon rainforest.
Robert holds two Master’s degrees, one in English Literature and the other in TESOL, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and works as a professor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He and his wife Susana currently live in Tarapoto, Peru, and occasionally lead journeys into the Amazon rainforest to encounter the healing traditions there. Susana Bustos
worked for over 10 years as a psychologist in Chile before receiving a scholarship from her country to conduct her doctoral studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, California. Her work in Chile included the creation of psycho-educational programs, academic teaching at several major universities, research on public health issues, and private clinical practice. In her work she incorporated her passion for the field of transpersonal psychology, for example, creating the first national program on drug abuse prevention directed to school children which included the spiritual experience as a protective factor. In the U.S., she utilized her background in music and drama therapy in her work with offenders of violent crimes, most of them drug abusers, in county jails of the Bay Area.
For the last 9 years, Susana’s work has focused on the study of Amazonian vegetalismo, particularly of the use of songs (icaros) during plant healing ceremonies, the subject of her doctoral research: “The Healing Power of the Icaros: A Phenomenological Study of Ayahuasca Experiences.” She currently works as a therapist and clinical supervisor at Takiwasi in the Peruvian jungle, a center for the treatment of drug addiction integrating indigenous and Western medicine, where she is synthesizing her experience into a model on how to integrate experiences in expanded states of consciousness into ordinary life.
Susana has co-authored two books on health and drug abuse prevention. She has published on icaros in magazines such as Shaman’s Drum and Uno Mismo, as well as in her essay “The Verse of the Plant We Follow,” which appears in Robert Tindall’s The Jaguar that Roams the Mind. Her most recent publication, The Shamanic Odyssey: Homer, Tolkien, and the Visionary Experience, co-authored with Robert Tindall, explores shamanic song in the bardic tradition of the ancient Greeks and Celts.
Susana is a certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitator, has led workshops and given lectures on the theme internationally, co-founded the Latin American Association for Holotropic Breathwork and Transpersonal Psychology, and worked for the Spiritual Emergency Network. She is a member of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology and the Association for Holotropic Breathwork International.
