Re: If you could choose one gun to protect yourself what would it be?
I'm planning on getting a gun in the next couple of weeks, but the choices are unbelievable. There are so many. This is like work.

So, this is for the people who really know their guns.

If you had to pick one , to defend yourself and your property (no hunting), money is no object, what would u buy? And nothing that is considered illegal by the government, as the laws stand today, so no machine guns or fully automatics

Make and model.

Anybody?

12 gauge shotgun is best bet for home defense. Mossberg 500 is reliable and not expensive. Make sure you get one with a stock and not just a pistol grip.

Re: If you could choose one gun to protect yourself what would it be?
I'd suggest a 12 gauge shotgun as well. Buy a variety of ammo for it.

a 12 gauge is the most versatile gun a homeowner can possess by offering so many ammunition choices.

buy buckshot or birdshot for home defense. Slugs for when TSHF. Get the combo slug/buckshot rounds. Make your own wax slugs. Buy some aguila mini shells. Get some dragon breath to scare the crap out of the intruder.

12 gauges are cheap to buy. They are easy to clean. They are awesome looking. And for fun you can take them skeet shooting.

If I had to grab only one gun and split...

It's for sure be my Weatherby-TAC 12...

It is good for:
Hunting, Defense, and with the right barrel it'd be a decent stand your ground weapon to about 50 yards.

Re: If you could choose one gun to protect yourself what would it be?
+1 for SKS. They can still be found if you know where to look.

I own a Romanian AK47 and an AR15. 7.62 is easier to come by than .223/5.56 at the moment. I would have gotten an SKS but I got the ak at a deal I couldn't pass up. Solid reliability, would have been a much more popular rifle if the ak didn't come out around the same time and overshadow it. You can retrofit SKS's to accept ak mag, as the duckbill mags are few and far between lately.

I love my AR and its accuracy, but let's get real: most of your targets will be at near to intermediate range. A properly-built AK can have formidable accuracy, and the SKS is generally more accurate than the ak right out of the box.

12 gauge shotgun is best bet for home defense. Mossberg 500 is reliable and not expensive. Make sure you get one with a stock and not just a pistol grip.
 Quoting: Tard

Maybe a Mossberg 500 20 gauge for home defense. At very short ranges (like inside your home) it's very effective and the recoil and report are much less than 12 gauge firearms.

Whatever you pick, prepare to be stunned by the sound -- if not deafening, certainly disorienting unless you're familiar with it -- and the flash (in a darkened home it can be temporarily blinding and, like the report, disorienting).

If you've never fired a 12 gauge, test fire one at a range and compare the kick with a 20 gauge. Strong men have commented wonderingly about the power of the 12's recoil. Some police departments found that their officers had better accuracy and recovery with 20 gauge.

Also, at close range, indoors (less than 20-30 feet), the hitting power of a 20 gauge is formidable. One writer described it as "75 % of the (12 gauge) power for 50% of the recoil".

And one repeat item: firing any weapon indoors is a startling experience. It's hard and dangerous to replicate beforehand. Most ranges require ear protection. Outdoor ranges let the sound and flash dissipate dramatically compared to indoor firing. If you decide to experience firing indoors without hearing protection, you really do risk permanent ear damage. If you don't, you won't know what to expect physically when you have to shoot inside. Tough choices, in my opinion.

Firing a full load .357 magnum with a short barrel on an indoor range is surprisingly flashy and loud (even with ear plugs/muffs). I have a hard time imagining what it would be like for someone awakened in the night and firing at an intruder. My guess is that there would a good chance for the home defender to drop the gun after the first shot.

At least with a 20 gauge, you have to use both hands. And so many people have commented on the sound of the pump being clicked (you've heard it in a thousand videos and movies) as a pre-fire deterrent. I have no idea if it's true, but it sounds macho-y enough.

Re: If you could choose one gun to protect yourself what would it be?
"Money no object", the OP said???

Money can always find a way...
Plenty ammunition out there for sale too.
Plenty of loading components for sale, some at prices below pre-Nov retail, if know where to look.

Armalite AR-10 A2 rifle probably cost you same or less than an AR-15. Buy a Lee Progressive handloader and dies, scale. tjconevera.com last week, still had bullet & brass combo deals. Reliable people selling good product. Buy 3 or 4 of those deals, then find a couple bricks of primers (winchester WLR large rifle type) and any of about 8 or 10 powders. One pound of powder will load about 175 rounds. If carefully assembled, according to Sierra Handloading Manual data you will have premium quality match ammunition.

Buy a basic Trijicon ACOG 4x battlesight w/integral carryhandle mount and .308/7.62x51 NATO reticle. Sight your rifle's iron sights in to be 3" or 4" high at 100yds and you have a Battle Sight Zero that places rounds within 6" out to 300/325 yds. Sight the ACOG in to work with the reticle hash marks.

Get a 20" barreled gun, no shorties. Be sure to buy Armalite and get their chrome-lined basic barrel.

Since money is no object, you also buy a quality Colt, older Kimber, Springfield Armory, or S&W 1911 type pistol in .45acp. The pistol should be 5" standard length and have adjustable sights. You also buy loading dies for it and a Jonathan Ciener or Kimber .22LR Conversion Kit to practice with and have a .22 pistol available when need one. Buy a few bricks of carton-pack 50rd boxes of .22lr solids.

Money really no object? You also buy a short-barreled .45acp for concealed carry unless you are big enough stature to conceal the full-sized 1911. And get a Ruger mkII 5.5" heavy barrel .22 pistol and couple spare mags as well or a Browning Buckmark for small game or rat/vermin shooting.

An AR-15 if loaded with 75/77gr match ammunition (handload yourself) is another option.

Would buy the loading gear RFN. Ebay, Gunbroker, Midsouth, Wideners, midwayusa, Natchezss, Brunos, Russ Haydens, and try your local indy gunshops.

Find some spare parts on ar15.com

Plenty deals out there.
Plenty guys think the gun-run is about hoarders and that supplies will catch-up to demand in 6 or 8 mos. They ain't gonna pay "gouger" prices...

My advice is to buy what you need ASAP and buy more; can always trade or sell later. Components are better than gold.

Really MNO? Get yourself a nice heavy barrel .308win for precision longrange and a good quality mil-dot scope. $10K ought to have you well-set for everything...
