Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy): new geysir-like fumarole vent observed, ongoing slow inflation
Inflation of the ground by about 10 cm since 1 Jan 2012 (OV / INGV)
A new fumarole vent has been detected recently in the Campi Flegrei in the hydrothermal field of Pisciarelli. The new vent was seen ejecting hot gas as well as geyser-like fountains of water reaching 4-5 meters of height. This will inevitably trigger headlines in the press about the possibility of a volcanic eruption in the area, however, it should be looked at in a context that such phenomena are a normal part of the behavior of (very) active hydrothermal systems such as the Campi Flegrei have. ...more [read all]

Paluweh volcano (Flores, Indonesia): post analysis of the 3 Feb eruption
Terra/MODIS image of potential pyroclastic flow deposits in the ocean west of Paluweh in Indonesia, taken February 2, 2013.( Image: R. Simmon / NASA, annotated by Erik Klemetti)
It seems that activity has decreased since the large explosion on Sunday. Erik Klemetti on the eruptions blog has compiled a number of interesting satellite images to compare the extent of pyroclastic flow deposits before and after the event, which probably was a combination of a larger partial dome collapse with an explosion (triggered by the sudden pressure release). ...more [read all]

Tremor signal from Etna (INGV)
Current seismic signal from Reventador (CONE station, IG)
Etna (Sicily, Italy): Another eruption has just occurred from Etna, indicated by the typical steep spike in the tremor signal. However, bad visibility due to clouds has not allowed visual observations. ...more [read all]
