Location aware browsing is a huge privacy issue.

Basically what it does is every time you go to a website that requests your location your browser will give it geo-locating information such as IP addresses to let the requesting site track you to wherever you are.

There is a very simple process to turn this feature off for good.

In your browser's address bar, type in about:config. There will be a box that pops up that warns about warranty info expiring blah blah blah. Ignore this warning and click I will be careful.

When you get to this page, there will be a search window at the top. What you need to do is type this in that search window exactly as written here. Just copy and paste.

geo.enabled

It will search your files and that one file will be singled out and displayed at the top of your search window.
Double click it to turn it off. You should see the value n the window change from true to false.

You're all finished. You have totally blocked access to your geo-location feature in your browser.

Just remember, anytime you update Firefox, your settings will set back to default so you will have to set the number at zero again to stop it.

Something else I wanted to discuss with you as well...

Did you know that when you visit a website on the internet, your computer deposits a cookie that lets the new website know what site you arrived there from.

So say you were looking at porn and then came to GLP, GLP would know which porn site you came from before you arrived.

Not exactly private but there is an easy fix.

We're going to do the same as last time by typing about:config into your browser's address bar.

Once you get in, type this into the search bar at the top.

network.http.sendRefererHeader

When the file is isolated, right click it, click modify and set the number value to 0 (zero).

That's it, you have stopped your browser from giving referrer information to the next site you visit. Again, remember that if you ever update your browser, you will have to do this over again so make a note to self.

If you have any questions, I will be glad to help.

I do plan on doing an encryption tutorial but it isn't as easy as what my past threads have been.

I'm still working on it and I'll get it up as soon as it's finished.

In the meantime I will be doing the simple fixes for you.

Enjoy!

Have you ever been surfing the net and go to a search page or something and see your location pop up? Or maybe have been targeted by advertising that seems to accurately "guess" where you are?

That is geolocating and this simple fix will put a stop to it.

If you're using Opera, and search for

geo.enabled

you get a not found message

so you have to check "show all', then scroll down to Geolocation, and uncheck the box that says

Enable geolocation

I've followed all of your tutorials and I can't thank you enough. My computer is running at lightening speed now. WOO HOO! There is no way the average computer user even has a clue to these things. My family can barely turn the computer on much less make sure they are not being tracked or recorded....

You mean like all the horny sluts in sex contact ads who always claim to be from my small town? I swear if there were that many horny sluts hungry for dick around here, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now!

Ahem...

Anyway...

I appreciate your advise, even though I don't really care about being tracked since I assume TPTB can track everything no matter what we do. But there are times when someone links a video or something, and the stupid site refuses to show the content to my particular geographic location, which is damn annoying. Some fuckers just don't understand that the internet is supposed to be INTERNATIONAL...

I saved your tip for later use, should take care of that little problem!

I'm thinking of doing a general computer repair/advice thread to help out with day to day computer issues.

I spend a LOT of time on GLP so I would be able to actively watch the thread for issues people are having. I'm no computer scientist, but I have picked up a few things over time that a lot of people don't really know about.

Let me know what you guys think!

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. OP, I've had my "geo" turned off for some time but great info for those still going uphill on the learning curve.

Question....some web sites ask, in a drop down box, "Would you like to share your location"? If, for some reason, I chose to share, does this revert the default to "2" in geo:enable?
