Re: Did you know that your browser is geolocating you? This is how to turn it off for good.
I did it, but why does it still displays our national flag on GLP?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23292132

Because you are browsing directly to GLP. Every one of you browsing internet are given an IP address. Your IP address can be geo-located. That's why you got your origin country flag. If you browse GLP through Proxy servers, the flag will be the country where the proxy servers are located. But most of the time, GLP blocks access from proxy servers especially the well known Proxies (Ultrasurf, Freegate and most web based proxies).

If you really want to be invisible in all your internet access, you need to use VPN (Virtual Private Network). When you use VPN service, your flag displayed will be the flag of your VPN server location. Remember, beside your IP address, your sent email and your instant messenger can be used to geo locate you too if you're not using VPN. But free VPN services are most likely blocked by GLP.

I've just updated my firefox but my location was already turned off and remained so. However I altered the other thanks. Can I also recommend 'ghostery' for blocking tracking cookies etc.

Re: Did you know that your browser is geolocating you? This is how to turn it off for good.
Nothing in the OP will stop websites from geolocating you by your IP address. That has nothing to do with the browser per se. Your IP address is the "return address" other sites use to know where to send what you requested, such as by clicking a link etc.

They know where you are by your IP address because they know the location of the ISP the IP address is assigned to. How close they can get to your exact location depends on the size of the geographic area served by the pool of addresses yours comes from.

There are ways of spoofing the IP address, but they usually entail paid services like proxies. TOR will also do it but it can be painfully slow. You can also spoof geolocating services by using a VPN (virtual private network).

Note that some sites won't accept connections from proxy or TOR servers. Membership sites like web boards are especially sensitive to this because it's frequently how spammers exploit such sites.

Not sure about other browsers, but the "geo.enabled" setting does prevent Firefox from sending enhanced geolocation data (data other than your IP address). However, according to Mozilla, it's always an opt-in, i.e. the browser asks you if you want it to provide geolocation data when it is requested by a website. See their description for details: [link to www.mozilla.org]

Fortunately (or not in some cases), geolocation by IP address doesn't work especially well. For example, if you try to geolocate me by my IP address the result will most likely be Bangkok or Chachoengsao, but I'm a 2-3 hour drive from those places. It does keep me from accessing things like Netflix here though, because Bangkok, while far from here, isn't in the US.

BTW, the "referrer" information isn't in a cookie, it's part of the HTTP request packet generated when you click the link. See this "Mozillazine" article: [link to kb.mozillazine.org]

If you want to obscure the page you're coming from, rather than clicking a link to the next page, you can simply copy-paste the link into the address bar of your browser. The browser won't identify the current page as the "referrer" because you didn't click anything on that site to get to the next site.

Re: Did you know that your browser is geolocating you? This is how to turn it off for good.
What is Location-Aware Browsing?

Websites that use location-aware browsing will ask where you are in order to bring you more relevant information, or to save you time while searching. Let’s say you’re looking for a pizza restaurant in your area. A website will be able to ask you to share your location so that simply searching for “pizza” will bring you the answers you need... no further information or extra typing required.

Or, if you’re mapping out directions to get somewhere, the website will know where you’re starting from so all you have to do is tell it where you want to go.

This service is totally optional – Firefox doesn’t share your location without your permission – and is done with the utmost respect for your privacy. And, like all elements of Firefox, it’s being created using open standards to ease adoption by Web developers.

Even if you "turn it off", there's still an IP and that will track you down to your doorstep every-time(unless of course you're stealing or using wifi on the move).

On Safari (Windows 7) it says navigation to this webpage has been canceled after typing about:config

On explorer it does nothing but go to a blank page, is this for Firefox only?

Keep thinking that, we'll let it be your little secret. I wouldn't try telling that to the people behind bars because of IP tracing technology and IP logs, though.

Re: Did you know that your browser is geolocating you? This is how to turn it off for good.
I'm thinking of doing a general computer repair/advice thread to help out with day to day computer issues.

I spend a LOT of time on GLP so I would be able to actively watch the thread for issues people are having. I'm no computer scientist, but I have picked up a few things over time that a lot of people don't really know about.

Let me know what you guys think!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33873648

I know I'd appreciate that! In the past I've had to replace a baby memory (RAM) stick, and in another laptop, replace the hard drive. Besides that kind of stuff, I've had to self- teach myself to do other stuff too, and it'd be nice to have a "Go to" place if I need advice or help with something. This laptop I'm on is very new - as in I bought it less than a week ago, and I'd like to make sure I maintain it properly.
