Those are pending patents, and the Xbox one is possibly going to happen with the next one.

I have worked in the cable industry for 7 years both in the field and in the highest level of networking and software support for the last 7 years. I can assure you, as of right now there is no camera or mic in those boxes. I've torn them apart myself and access the firmware daily.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13133565

I don't have to tear them apart to realize that there is no mic and/or camera in them. Not only would that be expensive on their part, but there would be MANY regulations as to what they could/couldn't do. They don't want the lawsuits and potential settlements down the road.

That isn't to say at some point they might not install cameras/mics in the boxes, it just wouldn't be for what those who are paranoid assume. It would most likely be nothing more than assisting them in determining what channels you watch, and at what time. The reason this is unlikely to happen, besides the fact of the costs of adding mics/cameras to each box, is because they can already DO that.

Essentially what I am saying, is not only is it NOT economically feasible, but it isn't even LOGICALLY feasible. They already have the information they are looking for, which contributes to finding out stats regarding network TV companies, and their programs.

Really? You mean you don't think most people know their viewing habits are tracked for ratings? LOL Just crawl out from under a rock?

And PS, that's not the same thing as the lunatic theory of your "TV watching you" that people post about here.

Fail post is Fail.
 Quoting: Floobarb the Argnorf

Exactly what I tried explaining to the paranoid, lunatic fringe crowd, in a rather civil manner mind you, only to be called a "troll".

It is remarkable how intelligent discussion is shunned in this day and age. Even on a web-site devoted to discussing theories of all kinds, it seems anyone who tries to use deduction, or reasoning of any kind , is shot down.

You have 90% of the forum convinced the know some secret, something the rest of the world doesn't know. They can't agree on what that secret is, for each of the 90% believes it is something different. When you systematically try to show them the fallacy of their beliefs, they are quick to insult you, try to belittle you, in the most elementary manner.

What they don't realize, is that it is THEM who are hindrance to Truth. For truth comes not from crack pot theories, truth comes from deduction. Someone who has no interest in the truth, wouldn't bother using reasoning or deduction. These people , who want to know what is going on in the world, attack the very ones contributing to the factual information we actually CAN verify....sad isn't it.

A troll is usually someone who creates posts or threads on an internet forum, for the sole purpose of getting a reaction out of someone, or a group of people. If I wanted to get a reaction out of anyone, do you really think I'd post something so BORING as the fact that there are no microphones or cameras in TV boxes? Do you really think THAT would be how I troll an internet forum?

I believe perhaps you were looking for the word 'shill'. I can only assume that is what you meant, since it is the popular insult on this forum , thrown around by those who refuse to accept that other people can come to separate conclusions regarding a subject on their own accord.

This isn't about you, nor me, but is an interesting subject nonetheless.

Since you have the box, can you take pics and post the links here?

I've found a report on the patent for the FIOS DVR you are speaking of:

[link to www.techdirt.com]

It appears it hasn't been released. Furthermore, the technology isn't to spy on you, it is to determine how many people are in a room, watching the television. That is nothing new.

Id be EXTREMELY happy to see the microphone and camera in your existing box, THAT would be interesting.

It it isn't the television that is a losing technology, it is moreso the cable TV that is.

Technology is rapidly changing, and I suspect it won't be long (within the decade) until it is all internet-based.

Few cable subscribers realize it, but each time they switch channels, their TV provider makes a note of it. Today, that data is primarily used for internal research and to inform ratings. But newly published work from researchers at AT&T shows how it could also be used to make TV advertising more compelling

This same technology is used for cell phones to get a prediction of where your gonna be and for how long.

Most people cop out by saying they have nothing to hide. I tell them that's not the point. The fact is they don't have the right.
