North Korea may simultaneously explode an upgraded plutonium bomb and another of highly-enriched uranium, General Jung Seung Jo told lawmakers today in Seoul at a meeting of the parliamentary defense committee. “Because they’ve already used plutonium twice, they will want to experiment with a warhead that has better performance and power,” he said. “They could showcase technological advances with highly-enriched uranium or by testing both types at once.” [link to www.bloomberg.com] |

Quoting: + DL + U.S. officials with access to intelligence reports said the North Koreans are expected to test fire either a new KN-08 road-mobile ICBM—capable of reaching parts of the United States—or a new medium-range advanced missile called the Musudan, also built on hard-to-detect mobile launchers. New intelligence on the KN-08, which was showcased for the first time last April during a North Korean military parade atop a Chinese-made mobile transporter-launcher, indicates the North Koreans are preparing to launch one or more of the missiles around the time they conduct a future nuclear test. Six of the missiles were shown during the parade. The range of the missile is not known because it has not yet been flight-tested. However, intelligence agencies believe it can range Alaska and Hawaii and possibly the U.S. West Coast. [link to freebeacon.com] |

Quoting: PolarPrecursor Will they wait till some part of the U.S. gets nuked before they act? Inquiring minds want to know! and NOW! 1) Nothing. 2) Reaction → press conference to address the new crisis 3) Now you know. Enjoy! On a less jovial note. Imagine if you would, that the test(s) happen on about the 14th and coincide with the flyby of the asteroid(s). Though non of them are evaluated to hit earth, if one did, and it pulled off a Tunguska style airburst, what would the global reaction be? Would anybody flinch? Could NKorea use the opportunity to sneak one out that might hit a target overseas with-out it getting intercepted? All the surveilance systems are going to be expecting meteoric items if anything. These are the sort of scenarios that should make you go "hmmm..." Not the other side. Suppose the calculations for the asteroid are off my a small amount. Say, a missed decimal point or an errant "carry the one." The airburst would probably be about 9000 meters or so, and the debris from the airburst would be traveling about 5.7 km/s. That makes a nice fat shotgun blast to whatever happens to be underneath. Say (for the sake of argument) that it's Tehran. What would be the aftermath of that? |
