I have thought a thought. What about the spaceships? Up until recent history they have had a crystal clear view of the planet. Now it is all cloudy for them. Maybe they think... shit that is the same thing we did to our planet before we got a clue. :)  That would go for all pollution as well as what nature does . . . but you are right persistent trails in the sky would tell ETs much about us . . .
