Having recently seen my first "snownado"-fast blowing snow is no joke. And the s**t hurts. Eye protection is a must, visor type or goggles preferred.

I think they got it pretty close, with some areas being more. Eastern Long Island definitely got it worse than I saw predicted. And it's not over

Eastern Long Island has definitely been the surprise location for this storm.'

Mainstream news media completely ignored that area, concentrating instead on Boston, NYC, a couple of places in Connecticut and the area around Providence, RI. But I have yet to see any video reports from anywhere on Long Island, much less Suffolk County, which seems to have taken the brunt. The only exception to this was one "I report" on CNN several hours ago, showing thundersnow somewhere on Central Long Island, but nothing at all from any national news reports.

I suspect this is because the official forecast had originally called for most of L.I. to get mainly rain until late in the storm, with snow totals being less than ten inches in all areas and less than 6" in Eastern Long Island. Looks like this was a gross underestimate.

What's going on is "convection", i.e. intense upward motion -- typically only in thunderstorms. = very high snowfall rates. (cc: @abycats)

I came on here 24 hrs ago giving the Dtown weather report! Hope everyone is ok? Cant beleive Hurricane " HAARP" Sandy folks are still out in tents, houses without power, ect. They were acting like babies in the beginning coming on lamestream news crying and stuff! But I will have to say! Hurricane Sandy victums went full blown born again Die Hard! God bless you folks ! Way to hard charge! A minister of death praying for war is the only way to be , peace.
