Yes it will snow but it will all be a lot wetter and warmer both before and after. We'll probably recover pretty fast from it. Also Sandy probably took out the weaker parts of the electrical infrastructure and hopefully power outages will not be common and will get repaired quickly. My generator stands at the ready :) Good luck everyone, may you all stay warm and safe. Best Wishes LVX! |

No gusty winds though. Still few view it as a large problem here. What is that hullabaloo about again? Some snow in New York? If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes. |

Again, it shows a big storm, but not a historic one. We're into nowcasting mode at this point though, models besides short range-specialty ones are pretty much useless. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 33941672 Portugal 02/08/2013 11:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Local NWS office used "fujiwara effect" in their discussion this morning concerning some possible low pressure interaction across the northern Plains this coming weekend. Would be cool to plot the lows and see if they interact. MODELS CONTINUE TO OFFER STRONG CONSENSUS THAT A MAJOR WINTER STORM WILL TRACK FROM THE COLORADO ERN PLAINS TO MN/IA/WISC VICINITY LATE SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY EVENING. BY MIDDAY MONDAY..SFC LOW SHOULD BE LOCATED NEAR CTRL UPR MICH/NE WISCONSIN. SNOW MAY TEASE REGION SATURDAY EVENING AS NRN BRANCH OF SPLIT FLOW ALOFT PUSHES A DAMPENING SHORTWAVE TROF ACROSS THE REGION. THE NRN BRANCH WILL DELIVER A SECONDARY MID LVL LOW OVER ERN MT BY SUNDAY EVENING. NOT SURE WHETHER THIS FEATURE WILL ALLOW SOME SENSE OF FUJIWARA EFFECT TO TREND THE MID LVL CENTER A BIT FARTHER WEST THAN FCST. I really don't want any fujiwara, with a foot of snow on the ground I'd rather keep any precipitation completely frozen and not partially liquid. LOOK AT THE LAST FRAME [link to images.intellicast.com] Quoting: Luisport The rain line is moving northward as expected. New York City may switch over to a period of rain or rain/snow mix before a harsh changeover to all snow occurs this afternoon. City is expected to pick up a foot or more of snow. Meanwhile, in Boston, it should be (er, continue to be) all snow. The ratio should easily pass 10:1 this afternoon, and may even make it to 15:1. I am forecasting 25-30 inches for the city itself, though areas north may get as much as 3 feet. My bold prediction is that Jim Cantore will see thundersnow for a record 5th time today. The convective bands may even produce a few lightning strikes! If anybody here lives in Boston, take my advice: If anything is stupid, trying to get out in 3-4"/hr snowfall rates with 30-50 mph winds and temperatures in the 20s is stupid. Please just stay home. Hopefully you prepared for this storm by stocking up on food, water, blankets, etc. because it's likely you'll be out of power for days to weeks. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1384680 United States 02/08/2013 11:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Geee I don't know? Its winter, it snows and historical, well I'm not sure, but looking back at the records this type of storm has happened before and in all liklehood will probably happen again. Seems to me if you live in the Northeast, upper midwest, or western states, it tends to snow in winter. Just an observation, but hell I may be wrong. BTW - where was HARP during all these previous storms? Just saying "BLIZZARD OF 1888" March 11-12, 1888 An unseasonable and devastating snowstorm struck from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine. The cities of Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and New York City were paralyzed. This incredible "Nor'easter" dumped 50 inches of snow in Connecticut and Massachusetts while New Jersey and the state of New York had 40 inches. Drifts of 40 to 50 feet high buried houses and trains. From Chesapeake Bay to Nantucket, 200 ships were sunk with 400 lives lost. 2) "ARMISTICE DAY STORM" November 11-12, 1940 Mild weather ahead of an intense low pressure system tracking from Kansas to western Wisconsin was quickly followed by a raging blizzard. Many people were caught off-guard by the severity of the storm and the plunging temperatures. Sixty degree temperatures during the morning on the 11th was followed by single digit readings by the morning of the 12th. These very cold temperatures and snow amounts were very unusual for this early in the season. Up to 26 inches of snow fell in Minnesota, while winds of 50 to 80 mph and heavy snows were common over parts of the states of Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan. These winds were responsible for whipping up 20 foot drifts. A total of 144 deaths were blamed on the storm (13 in Wisconsin), most of which were duck hunters along the Mississippi River. Milwaukee received only a trace of snow, but 80 mph winds downed hundreds of trees. [link to www.crh.noaa.gov] |
