the sound he was making and when he was down on the pavement, before he says "I can't breathe" wasn't from the slap/punch directly. It was his chest constricting in a diaphragm spasm [link to en.wikipedia.org]
because when he landed on his back it knocked the wind out of him.

I gotten the wind knocked out of me before falling on my back and thats the sound you make.
