Most of the Solomon quakes - and all of the large ones there - also occurred at about that depth; 26km/16miles. |

It's also completely different faults The image I have of this quake (in my inbox) shows they are on the same line, it runs from here up the side of Sumeria. Not sure I can link it. As far as plates go, no, it is not that far. . In both cases it's the Australia plate that has to do with pressure building up. In case of the Sumatra Andaman quake it subducted under the Burma plate/Indian plate right at the Sunda trench, the quakes we're discussing here are partly caused by subduction of the Australia plate under the Pacific plate. It only appears to be the same fault becuase in both cases it's the plate boundary of the Australia plate. the real problem is subduction in those two places you mention there is continuing, but the continental crust north of Oz is now butting up against PNG, and because it IS continental crust, it can't subduct. this is putting enormous pressure on the whole plate basically OZ is bulldozing it's way north, instead of down, into the mantle [link to www.iris.edu] look at it. it is obvious what is going on when this shit breaks loose, it is gonna be EPIC! what a time to be alive. What's going to happen? |
