Anonymous Coward User ID: 32213631 Ireland 02/08/2013 12:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | as i calculated for you tards in the other thread, this thing is only going to have an impact force of around a hiroshima sized bomb. do the kinetic energy calc yourself; 100,000 metric tons, assuming 30,000 burn off in the atmosphere, and 3500 km/h, assuming it is slowed by 2/3rds during entry, which is a likely estimate if you bother to calculate air resistance. even at full speed of ~11,000km/h and full mass 130,000 metric tons it's still considerably smaller than a standard hydrogen bomb in terms of impact force. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32213631 Hey man no need for such anger! Thanks for the math I hadn't seen any such calculations yet. I still have slight concern for it bringing down satellites though. Oh, yea, a Hiroshima bomb would still be quite significant in a populated area, obviously. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32213631 Ok assuming that is correct, and the object isn't any bigger, though it probably is, wouldn't this create some kind of pull on the earthquake faults, or cause a massive tsunami event on both coast lines? |

Quoting: TheTruthMonger No they haven't. It won't get "pulled in." Earth's gravity is already accounted for!!! Stop the fear mongering! Not fearmongering , doc! There is a legitimate chance that this thing could hit satellites. Never say never. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 11326620 United Kingdom 02/08/2013 01:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As the satellites are more or less at similar altitudes, there are only two very tiny "windows of opportunity" on its way in and out where the asteroid passes though those altitudes. As the geostationary satellites are positioned above the equator, they have ruled out those positions being in danger. Basically it would take something astronomical .... oh heck |
