A friend of mine got locked out of her pc and at the same time the phone rings. The guys says he works for Microsoft and wanted $200 to unlock her pc. Wanted her credit card number. She called me instead and I reloaded the hidden partition thus wiping out his lockout program. Another friend had his yahoo account hacked. Seems to be an uptick with this kind of thing.

At least they weren't asking for the serial numbers for the copy machines in the office...

I got customer with this problem im going to wipe it tomorow.

they want to remotely control the computer and steal all your info on your hard drive. He got very mad when I asked questions and told him I was calling microsoft

Just re-install the OS on your computer (hopefully you backed up everything and still have the system disks that came with your computer).

Is it XP? After reloading the hidden partition I went to MS update but update wouldn't work. I had to download service pack 3 from my laptop and load it on hers. Then update would work....

Why? If you're concerned, reset the modem and move on. Simply unplug for a count of twenty and plug it back in.

Why not just install a linux distro?

Mint and Ubuntu are pretty user friendly.

Are you kidding? Surely, you can spot these wackos a mile away. That "company" has called me many times claiming that my "Windows" is spreading viruses to other computers. The first time they called, I lied and said, "I don't have a computer." Then he was like, "Everyone has a computer." And I said, "Well I don't so what are you talking about?" So it went back and forth to the point where he started swearing at me.

Anyway, here's what I do with these kinds of people. There's also another company that called me for a LONG time saying that they're going to clean my "ducts" (?). I told them that the next time they call me, I'm calling the police because they're harassing me. They said "ok" and hung up. :)

If you Google "Who calls me from..." and enter the number, you can usually find a bunch of other people who have received the same phone call. I tend to not pick up for any number I don't know, unless I want to have some fun with the telemarketers.

And most legit companies will not cold call you like that. Just an FYI.
