Ok, if some of you think this is normal, then maybe the rest of us who don't think it's normal slipped into your dimension.

Thunder and lightning tend to happen when a cold air mass meets with a warm air mass.

I was like

pulled into a gas station and talked to an old man that was sitting inside first thing he said.

"Damn thundersnow aint worth a shit"

i just laughed and nodded

i had never heard of it before... went home and googled and sure enough it was real and does happen.

I've heard it many times over the years when it's been snowing really bad.

Happened here in the UK last week. High winds, snow/hail and a thunder storm. Was awesome.

-Not going to take the time to read this entire thread and see if its been stated but...No. Its not "new"- It isnt common (and it has been much more prevalent in recent years) but the Blizzard of 78 had thunder/lightning and I am sure it happened before then as well as it is a natural phenomenon. =/

I have witnessed it in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s in Michigan although it was very rare- have now seen it more in the last few years than those three decades combined- BUT it is not "new."

I lived up north in the 70s and I remember a bad storm we had was around 76 and there was thunder and lightning with snow and ice it was very bad storm.

my opinion is all the erupting volcanoes are pumping so much energy in the form of ash heat and all the gases into the atmosphere that things like this are becoming far more common than they used to be.

yes, thundersnow has always happened, but very rarely. when people start noticing shit like this, worldwide, it's a clue something is up.

That is an interesting theory. I know very little about the "hard sciences" but there certainly is something which has changed.

You are correct also that it used to be quite rare- I think I have seen it at most 4-5 times from the 1970s through 2005 or so and I live in a heavy snowfall region.

Since winter of 2010 (I am sure of the year because I moved back to Michigan)I have now seen it every Winter at least once. This year alone I have seen it 3 times- So yeah...

Here in NC we have thundersnow occasionally. In fact we had it in January. I was in Greensboro for work and while walking across the parking lot of my hotel while it was snowing a huge crack of thunder and then bolt of lightning lit up the sky. It was very eerie at the time.

In fact its not something new its been around for years. I remember Paul Knaut in Maine, he was a meteorologist as well as an American Indian, and he was talking about the snow thunder many years ago Roughly about 35+ years ago. The way he spoke about it was that if you got snow thunder in December within 1 weeks time a bigger storm was coming. If you got one in January within 2 weeks a bigger storm was coming. So be on the look out for a bigger storm to be coming in a few weeks.

In the old days people didn't pay much attention to it, they knew it was a warning that something else would be coming soon after.

Why is it not normal? We get them here all the time in the winter, although generally with hail, not snow - we get next to no snow at all this far south of course.

so I was watching the weather channel earlier and they were showing the snow coming down and then they showed a clip where it was thunder and lightning

ok people this is not normal!

I use to live up north and I never ever recall thunder and lightning during a winter storm!

In my experience it is uncommon as opposed to not normal. At least in the Midwest.

We had this the other day, it was snowing really badly, then all the street started lighting up and it turned out to be thunder and lightning, bit strange.

I have lived in Maine for 40 yrs. Thunder and lightening winter storms is NOT normal. I have NEVER even heard of such a thing in New England....maybe other areas of the country but definitly to here...Very strange indeed!!

Has happened for thousands of years... nothing even vaguely unusual about this.

asked my mother today she in her late 80s lives in Mass.

I asked her if she ever heard of it or experienced it

she said NO and said she saw the weather channel thunder lighting thing as well..

again.... what im trying to show you is this didn't happen many moons ago this is something new..

you know they can manipulate weather...and sometimes when you manipulate weather it doesnt always go how you wanted it..

they can make it rain they can make hurricanes snow storms they can MOVE snow storms
