Releasing a dove is a symbolic appeal for peace. But when the Pope tried it yesterday, it led to quite a flap.
Nobody had bargained on a resident seagull who apparently hadn't been listening to the Holy Father's sermon.
It swooped in and attacked the bird of peace as soon as Pope Benedict XVI released the dove from a balcony at the Vatican.

Yeah, but you can also look at it as though the pope threw out the dove and when it tried to get back in it wasn't allowed. The seagull then represents the fellow travellers of the pope, working in alliance to hurt the dove.

The pope provides no protection while leaving the dove to its fate with the seagull.

This is actually completely normal and expected if you release a tame captive bird like this dove into the wild, wild birds automatically attack it and kill it.
