Ok, my question is: which distance is the critical one when Earth can pull in this sweetie? lol
1o ooo Miles? 5ooo Miles?

Please answer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26985611

0 miles (actually just a few dozen above that it would probably explode in the atmosphere). Earth's gravity is already accounted for. You're welcome.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Why do you do this?
I just think it's interesting, the sheer number of posts, the extreme effort you go to... wow! You are devoted to straightening people out.
Is this your calling?
Do you feel like maybe you are wasting your life standing in the way of people's opinions?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8470135

I stand in the way of false astronomical doom. I think it's interesting that you don't give a damn about the truth. I think it's interesting that you get all butthurt when someone who actually knows what the hell he's talking about comes on here and explains the truth.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Awwww, man. I was just gonna laud you for not ripping the flesh off people today, and then I find this! To quote you: "...you get all butthurt...." Well, sure 'nuff you're the expert on "butthurt" Dr. Ass-strobe. Sorry. At least it's not your real name. Or is it? Were you christened Jethro Astro?

Perhaps, when the asteroid goes by, everyone who said Dr. Astro was wrong were forced to give Astro Good Karma...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74444

Nobody here is saying that astro is wrong, and that the asteroid is going to hit us without a shadow of a doubt! We are simply stating that Astros prediction that it will NOT his us 100%, is NOT a fact like he is trying to sway us to believe.

If astro had his way, this thread would have been shut down long ago as soon as he made his statement because he is a know it all.
How about giving that karma to the people who are trying to gather and share knowledge instead of squash the thread.

Why do you think hes a super shill and out to get everyone? I have been here for years now and have watched most all of his threads. He has been consistent in his approach to space related topics the entire time. He isn't always the debunker go back and look. Maybe you should for once think about what most idiots spew around here. Almost all the stuff we argue about is petty and doesn't make a difference. We speculate a LOT and rarely produce real presentation worthy material. Why can't we just take a step back and look at stuff objectively for once.

IF we are the sluths we think we are, we need to become more objective and stop arguing over this petty crap. Its just a distraction, are we not here for the truth or however close we can get to it? We should work together to maximize our potential to learn REAL knowledge. It exists here, you must search but it is here.

Another thing, we could all solve the shill problem in a heartbeat and IDK why we haven't just done it yet. It's simple, if we all treated each other respectively and acted friendly toward each other, we would spot the shills instantly every time. We just need to come together for a common purpose, and that is to gain true knowledge. We need to treat each other like we would treat our loved ones, do you want your ascension? Do you not want a better world for your children and yourself? It never makes sense to go backwards, so lets just all help ourselves by helping each other.

I think if anything, it will probably just wizz by really close but with all the changes this planet is going through and the huge uptick in lava flow and earthquakes and volcanoes and climate change and pole wander and odd sun activity, we could have ourselves a pole reversal trigger

NASA's exact prediction of the close approach distance (note these distances are to earth's center, not the surface, subtract a mean radius of 3959 miles):
[link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov]
Close approach between 17,194.1444 - 17,205.4341 miles. My figure falls into their close approach range, I am not in disagreement with NASA.

hmm, thanks Astroid.

i never got that part before about how the distance from earth was actually to the center of the earth. so if we subtract that approximately 4000 miles from the approximately 17,000 miles estimate of distance from [center of] earth, we get a result of 13,000 miles distance from the surface of earth when it passes...what the ramifications are, not sure if much more needs to be said. NASA is the keeper of the tools, but if the AMATEURS COULD PERHAPS GIVE AN HONEST HEADS UP TO WHO MAY WANT TO RE-LOCATE FOR A FEW DAYS, it would surely be sweet.

I'm asking you direct questions. I know what I heard you say in your video! I saw your graphics! You claim an even steeper pass with much less chance of a geosynchronous collision, to the INSIDE (between earth and the toroid of space junk and sats) and you show this in your graphics, which means you are countering NASA's claim of a geosynchronous hazard. ..which means you are claiming an approach closer to earth based on your latest and better astrometry. Please answer my earlier question: why is NASA still, as of their update today, broadcasting "Astrometry URGENTLY Needed" especially since you have all the answers?

Re: Asteroid approach shrank to 14,000 miles this a.m. + NASA says "Astrometry is URGENTLY Needed"
Remember an object's mass increases with it's speed. How fast is the object moving and what is it's estimated stationary mass? The Earth's crust and atmosphere has a negative static charge so what is the object's predominate mineral mass charge: do positive or negative elements make up the greater porportion of its mass? When it spins close by Earth there will be a static discharge if it comes close enough and this discharge will either draw it closer or push it away depending on the objects net polarity charge of negative or positive. Might be the cause of an uptick or decrease in Earthquakes at the least and may affect the weather to some degree.

Yes, it is. 100%. We know the uncertainty region of this asteroid's position and it does not overlap earth at all. That means there is no chance that it hits us at all. Funny that people rip me for boldly stating this fact, but they won't apologize when the asteroid passes by right in the predicted uncertainty region.

 Quoting: Kimpy2 20290901

No I don't. Learn what significant figures are. NASA's not saying it's 17000 miles exactly on the dot. Please tell me you're not that stupid.
Sorry, your claims don't add up. I watched your entire video this morning. Huge contradictions.
 Quoting: Kimpy2

Quit trying to confuse people. Quit trying to attack my video on false premises. People like you are why I will never stop debunking, because people like you need to be put in their place.

 Quoting: Dr. Astro

hmm, thanks Astroid.

i never got that part before about how the distance from earth was actually to the center of the earth. so if we subtract that approximately 4000 miles from the approximately 17,000 miles estimate of distance from [center of] earth, we get a result of 13,000 miles distance from the surface of earth when it passes...what the ramifications are, not sure if much more needs to be said. ASA is the keeper of the tools, but if the AMATEURS COULD PERHAPS GIVE AN HONEST HEADS UP TO WHO MAY WANT TO RE-LOCATE FOR A FEW DAYS, it would surely be sweet.
 Quoting: eos

No, the 17194-17205 figures are after subtracting the earth radius of 3959 miles. The NASA table I linked to is prior to that subtraction and is in AU. I did the math for you to arrive at 17194-17205.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

ok, thanks for making that clear.

There's always the small but cannot be ruled out possibility that this asteroid could be deflected by another asteroid that hasn't been plotted.

Remember when that Mars probe missed the planet because they forgot to convert from miles to km?

Yeah. NASA if funny!

Re: Asteroid approach shrank to 14,000 miles this a.m. + NASA says "Astrometry is URGENTLY Needed"
Wrong. We have the technology to "really" track this thing. The orbit is known. I don't give a damn what names you call me for stating it as such. I will laugh in the faces of my detractors when this asteroid passes us by EXACTLY as predicted. I will track it myself and compare where it actually went to where it was predicted to go, and when I do that and show that it followed my predictions exactly, I will count how many people admit they were totally wrong. I expect that number will probably be close to 0.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Ok Doc. I get where your coming from. I am simply stating that "your technology" to track this thing is just modern. This "thing" headed our way is pushing boundries id say of our current technologies.
 Quoting: Citratox

I completely disagree with that. This asteroid's orbit is very easily knowable with current technology. If I can figure it out for myself without NASA's help at all, then it's nowhere near the boundaries of our technology.
Tell me, do you know all of the absolute facts about 2012 da14's path and what it is made of and how the guts of this thing effect its "path"? No, you dont.
 Quoting: Citratox

The guts of this thing are irrelevant to its path. Objects fall at a constant rate in a given gravity well regardless of what they're made of. Basic physics.

You persist in speaking of this asteroid as simply a mechanical phenomenon floating on by! My underlying concerns are: 1. Massive electrical discharge between DA-14 and Earth (largest object in history of tracking, per NASA, and they're not sure of it's exact size, and closest approach...ever recorded!) 2. The distance it passes by us, to the last kilometer, is highly significant in terms of the potential electromagnetic linkage between these bodies that we, you, no one knows about or understands. This is a quite large and highly charged homopolar motor flashing by us at rather high speed. It doesn't have to directly hit us (and you promised it won't) to impart an enormously memorable teachable moment to the Human Race. I am and will remain totally humbled by the power and unpredictability of this gorgeous Electric Universe. www.holoscience.comyoda

The uncertainties in plane-of-sky position, Doppler frequency, and time delay will grow dramatically
during the approach, but even so, this object cannot impact Earth during this encounter.

The point is, closest approach has now dropped 3,000 mi. (from 17,000 mi. to 14,000 mi. OVERNIGHT, and we have 6 days to go. Look at the astonishing, intensifying graph sequences on Children of the Atom thread this a.m. from Meteorscan.com (I.e. Meteor Detection and Radio Astronomy. You must study Children of the Atom's screenshots he has posted, because the site is constantly updating, as you know. what sort of damage would a rock of this size do?

because 50meters is absolutely microscopic in terms of the universe

You do the math...

But DA14 isn't a threat at all. 14,000 miles is still a big distance. The object is merely 50 m big.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34004556

excellent resource, thank you!

i calculated for a 45 degree angle of possible impact, for an asteroid density of stone, not iron (which is heavier and therefore increases speed/impact/damage) landing on sedimentary rock, which is most similar to the area of northern Texas which some have estimated to be a possible area of impact.

The results show that life threatening damage extends to as much as a 900 MILE RADIUS OF THE IMPACT SITE. If you 10 miles away, the AIR BLAST arrives in less than a minute.

At 900 miles away, the air blast arrives at about an hour, and will still strip trees and blow out windows. Wooden structures will remain at that distance, but most will not at closer distances.

So, i am not at all an astronomer, amateur or otherwise. However, if i had family and friends in northern Texas or anywhere around those parts, perhaps as far north from there as Denver, i would give them a call and see that they have a plan, and a full tank of gas for Valentine's Day.

If you see it might hit, and you are within 500 miles of impact IN ANY DIRECTION, safest place might be in a car to gain more distance from the AIR BLAST, and keep the head down and don't park under a bridge if you are in that radius. This event would be EXTREMELY LOUD, and would most likely stun or render unconscious.

ok, now everyone breathe and enjoy life. just be sure your loved ones are aware, don't expect the government to save you.

there are always miracles, believe, but use your common sense, nothing gained from public hysteria. after all, it's not supposed to hit at all, but it could explode in upper atmosphere or perhaps even closer.
