Halcyon Dayz, FCD User ID: 31033756 Netherlands 02/10/2013 12:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This rock masses something like a million tonnes at least, satellites typically mass a few tonnes. Quoting: Halcyon Dayz, FCD The satellite would get dustified, the rock would barely notice. It would get a little crater and might loose a few centimetres per second of speed. Which might make a difference a thousand years later, but not now. er, maybe if the asteroid was a 'million tonnes' like you said, but that is incorrect. The asteroid weighs approx 130,000 meric tons. Ugh. I used D not r. Anyhoo, same OOM. And: Mass - This estimate assumes a uniform spherical body with the computed diameter and a mass density of 2.6 g/cm3. The mass estimate is somewhat more rough than the diameter estimate, but generally will be accurate to within a factor of three. [link to web.archive.org] I used 2.7 g/cm^3 which is the best current estimate for such asteroids. So it'd loose 10 cm/s. Big deal. Anything energetic enough to change its orbit enough to hit Earth would turn it into an expanding cloud of rubble. Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi! pmb1 User ID: 32803227 United States 02/10/2013 12:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I finally decided to put my 2 cents in here. I personally am at awe. I have to wonder #1 why we even believe half of what NASA says. Then I have to secondly wonder where some folks get off saying stupid BS. Why am I saying that? Has anyone noticed how NASA went from it will miss, to there is a very slim chance to once again there is no chance?? What did they all decide they can't figure out crap or did they let the cat out of the bag? I just have to wonder. Thursday they stated to the public there was a slim chance of it hitting the earth a greater chance of it hitting satellites and now no chance at all????? Then I read what a crazy man had to say on RN forum, about how all the satellites were going to be fine because the owners of them had remote controls so they could move them out of the way??? That's new, all the time Satellites are being hit by space junk, yet they can move them?? Why not move them before they get hit by space junk? But then we have to realize how much junk is up there and how many satellites are up there. Do you really think that something coming straight at them is going to miss all of them?? You can do an experiment by scattering tons of junk around a baseball on the floor with junk being small pieces of paper roll a marble the same way this will be coming in and you will see exactly what I mean, something Will get hit. Even if its not earth the junk, or the satellites will get hit. But why did they say just a few days ago there was a very slim chance of it hitting and a greater chance of it hitting satellites and now all of a sudden it wont do either. WTF? Am I missing something here? Also they told how big of an area if it did hit the earth would be effected a 750 mile area would be effected if it hit land. Why would they even say that if they thought nothing would happen?? Once again making me wonder am I missing something here??? But wait they have now changed their minds and we have nothing to worry about. |

Quoting: pmb1 Like everyone else NASA gets it data from the MPC who gets it from hundreds of observers the world over. Including amateurs. Get the data yourself and do the numbers. Then I read what a crazy man had to say on RN forum, about how all the satellites were going to be fine because the owners of them had remote controls so they could move them out of the way??? That's new, all the time Satellites are being hit by space junk, yet they can move them?? Why not move them before they get hit by space junk? Quoting: pmb1 Geostationary satellites usually have some manoeuvring fuel to kick them in a graveyard orbit when they retire. It could be use to move the sat out of harms way. But is only very rarely that you know that something is coming. But then we have to realize how much junk is up there and how many satellites are up there. Do you really think that something coming straight at them is going to miss all of them?? Quoting: pmb1 Space is big. You have been disinformed by sensationalist media. There never was a risk of this rock hitting Earth. There was a small risk of it hitting a sat. Which would be a risk to space, not Earth. and a greater chance of it hitting satellites and now all of a sudden it wont do either. WTF? Am I missing something here? Quoting: pmb1 Yes. Further observations, which allowed to refine the orbit of DA14. It's trajectory is now more precisely know. Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi! Quoting: --Voltaic-- I found the confidence of zero impact strange in combination with the urgency of astrometry needed. I remember saying days ago, NASA's statement of a 99.999% chance of impact did not reflect such a close encounter. I would expect 99.98122% or 98.9999% or 99.909912% chance of miss, but thats how you catch a liar. 99.99999% was ordered to be published to hide the real impact chance. Which, according to logic at this point, should have decreased a little. If it was 99.999% and now it scoots inwards, has that number changed any? Probably not, which backs up my belief of disinformation being pushed. There is NO chance of impact on this encounter. None whatsoever. We already have new astrometry prior to the encounter, and now the uncertainty region is incredibly tight. It does not overlap earth at all, not even close, which is why there is NO chance of impact. Yo Astro mutt, if this thing hits, can you promise not to ever post on GLP forever???? if it doesnt hit, will you and everyone shilling promise to never post here either? |
