For anyone traveling full time around the U.S. it is getting harder and harder to find places to park overnight for free.
There was a time a few years ago when I was young when state parks were free to get in and only charged a few dollars to camp. Now state and national parks charge an entrance fee, then a camping few plus tax. Usually ends up being over $25 a night.

Almost all public lands east of the Mississippi are fenced and charge a camping fee. Yes, you can park "anywhere", but many areas are now posted with "no camping allowed in this area".

Even Walmart is shutting down overnight parking in many areas.

Don't even think about just pulling off the side of the road to sleep over night. You will get a knock on the window from some cop.

Most shopping centers now have "no overnight parking" signs everywhere.

Hey, I'm not a bum or trying to live off the public, but there is public land EVERYWHERE in America and it's all being closed off.

Everywhere the land is either private and posted, or public and posted, owned by the some government agency (military, state, feds, nasa, etc.).

The time will come when people are all wandering America and are told to "move along".

Wait and see...

How has it gotten to the point where citizens can't use millions of acres of land just because some government agency says it is theirs? Who says so?

Is public places like marinas, public lakes, national forests and state and national parks just for those that can pay for it? Golf courses, swimming pools, wi-fi, lodges owned by corporations, but YOU can't share it unless you pay...

*sigh*

Why hasn't anyone else noticed what is happening here?

Cops stop and hassle you not for speeding, running stop lights but for parking in a public place over night...

This is wrong!

I know, someone will post that "I should live in the real world." Well, when will this stop? Either the land is ironically an Indian reservation, private property, government owned or corporate owned. What about the rest of us???

I am blissed so far to have a little money for paying if I have to, but many can't. Plus, I travel out in the middle of nowhere on small state roads. Nothing for miles and miles that is legal to park overnight. The local cops are like property watch dogs.

If it wasn't for sleeping in Walmarts and truck stops I would be in real difficulty.

I just was hassled by a Sheriff because "he had seen my truck in the area for 3 days". Think about that for a minute!

I was parking in a place allowed, but he saw me around his town too long!

I can tell you, this is increasing everywhere...

I can do a lot of illegal things to get by, but I should have it! It's our land damn it!

Plus, if you get caught sleeping in a hotel parking lot, you go to jail!!! This is no joke. Trespassing...

Hmmm, well I guess since I sleep in my own bed in my own house I don't have to worry about cops knocking on my window. And if I'm traveling, well, I discovered many years ago they have these things called. . . wait for it. . . "hotels"! You can actually go into these buildings and rent living quarters complete with a bed, bathroom, TV, etc., for just one night if you want, and no cops show up to hassle you or tell you to move along. I know, it's amazing isn't it. It sounds like you should look into that.

Get a flat tire and stash it in the back, park on the side of a highway, change a good tire with the flat tire and just go to sleep.

Make sure you tint your windows or at least get window covers and you should be good. Also its legal for Semi-drivers to kick it in rest areas and I've seen them park on off ramps to sleep, so why couldn't you?

Millions of acres have now been called National Wildlife Preserves and hunters can hunt there, but you can't camp without a fee.

No overnight parking in public marinas, boat ramps or public parks.

How about this one. Acres and acres around things like water towers, com towers, etc. The whole acreage is off limits...

It goes on and on...

Again, I am NOT crying about my problem. SOON this may be your problem also...

They allow "lodges" owned by corporations to make millions in our state and national parks and YOU can't even park overnight in the parking lot sleeping in your car!

They will NOT give you a ticket, they will throw you in jail for trespassing!!!!

All railroad land nationwide (millions upon millions of public owned land) is all labelled as "No Trespassing"...

Want to just stop for a few hours during long trip? You see a nice empty local town's baseball park. It's late and you will be gone at about sun up?

The local town "junk yard dog" cop will be knocking on your window before you get your shoes off.

You weren't breaking any laws except for a fucking sign. They won't just be nice and ask you to leave. Oh no. "Can I see your drivers license please?" Then, "What are you doing here?" One mistake and you are off the the jail cell!

To be completely honest, that is EXACTLY the way it has gotten. All of the government and military have access to millions of acres to use as they wish, but YOU can't.

What is SO sad is that no one is even concerned about it...

Step by step they are removing ALL freedoms. I don't work now, have a paid for camper and little money to travel finally and I am having a VERY hard time just finding a place to park over night. NOT camp with a fire, NOT any hook-ups, NOT any water. JUST SLEEP!!!

And I keep getting hassled by local government paid for thugs in black...

Why does a military base need a million acres? Why does a National Park need thousands of acres that they can restrict from anyone, but them?

Why does a railroad need millions of acres of right-of-way unused, but you are trespassing?

Why can't you just park over night next to a beautiful lake? Not make a fire, not pitch a tent. JUST...PARK...OVERNIGHT?

Who made these rules?

Stop and ask yourself:

- Why can't you park overnight at a local airport or railway station for free? It's owned by the public.

- Why can't you use local parks and recreation areas for free?

- Why can't you park at local public lakes overnight for free? No services, just park.

- Why can't you park overnight on the side of a state or county road as long as you are not blocking traffic?

- Why can't you also use government recreation areas and parks?

The list goes on and on...
