The single most important tool that I have found is Twitter. The key to finding breaking news, as well as vital news that might slip completely by, is to have a twitter account with as many good underground news sources as you can find. Just random occupy bloggers, or internet journalists, they get stuff out there that the main media would otherwise actively work to destroy. So go make a twitter account and start searching for sources, you'll get scoops days ahead of time as long as you know what to look for. I will post other snippets of important advice below, if anyone knowledgable cares to share.
