Windows 8 - New user here
So I recently upgraded to a new laptop, that came with Windows 8. It's a Sony Vaio, and super fast: 8 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive, 3d generation I-7 processor, HD display and webcam, backlit keyboard.....I'm kinda a computer geek deep down, in that, I like my laptop to be fast and have good specs.

Anyway....I've only had it about a week, and I'm just wondering - is there anything, besides the start page, that is that different then windows 7? Anything I should look at/play around with?

Just curious..thanks!

I've had Win8 for about three weeks now. You can download a nifty program that provides the usual start menu, did you know?

But some people are going to have a hard time with it, because it's laid out like a cross between a smart phone, a tablet or pad, and a desk top.

esc+ctrl will give you the background and icons, if you didn't already know ;)

Really think so? So far I'm happy. I don't see how it that much different, I will say that (besides the start screen), but I wouldn't say I am unhappy with it. I wasn't really looking to upgrade to it, but the new laptop came with it of course. That and Microsoft Office 2013, instead of 2010. Happy so far with that too, but haven't used it too too much yet.

yeah, it takes some getting used to for sure. I like that I can put just want I want on the start screen. Can set it up how I want it - with the stuff I use the most.

haha funny =)

Yes - I prefer laptops over desktops because I can move it around easier: sometimes I use it in my room, sometimes in the kitchen, etc. Also travel with it sometimes. Although, I will say I like how desktops are made now: all in one machines - no tower, but not good enough for me to switch =)

It is different in the sense that it is new, but you should become familiar with it in no time.

I am partial to linux mint [link to linuxmint.com]

If it's an older computer, I would install linux mint MATE. My spouse has an old laptop from 2006 that runs linux mint MATE (it's less resource hungry).

If it's a newer computer, linux mint cinnamon is more aesthetically pleasing.

GNU/Linux has come a long way. Installation is as easy as inserting a disk into the disk drive and clicking through the menus that are presented, and once installed it can be easier to use than Windows for most tasks.

Yes, I want to look into the integration with the Xbox 360 for sure. We got one about a year ago (with the Kinect). Its mostly used by my boys, but me and hubby play sometimes too =)

Thanks for your reply too!

Same fear here! They make those "laptops" now with windows 8 where you can detach the screen part from the keyboard, so its a tablet, or have the keyboard and its a laptop....cant remember who makes them, but yeah....I def. prefer a laptop. I have a Kindle Fire too for reading and share it with my kids to they can play games/stay entertained on longer car rides, but I VERY much prefer my laptop.

Games may or may not be an issue. That is one area of support that has not come a long way. STEAM is going to stat supporting linux.

As far as homework, are you asking about office software similar to Microsoft Office?

Have you ever heard of LibreOffice? It's free and available for all operating systems. If you installed linux mint it would be included with the installation. Here is the LibreOffice website [link to www.libreoffice.org (secure)]

Most tasks that people do on their computer can be performed on a linux machine. Moreover, Linux is more stable, secure, and free.

I tried to install Mint and different versions of X and Ubuntu....it always hangs during the install. I think it has to do with the Nvidia based GPU or something.

Oh man that crap drove me absolutely insane when i tried it. Seriously.
"White privilege" is the liberal religion's version of Original Sin: you are born guilty, and you carry that burden of guilt all your life, and the only way to escape eternal damnation is for white people confess their sin, to bow, kneel and believe the dogma of the Church of Liberalism, genuflect at its altars, honor its saints, fill the collection plate, and never, ever doubt.
