I don't see how it that much different, I will say that (besides the start screen), but I wouldn't say I am unhappy with it. I wasn't really looking to upgrade to it, but the new laptop came with it of course. That and Microsoft Office 2013, instead of 2010. Happy so far with that too, but haven't used it too too much yet. Consumers such as yourself will accept whatever is handed to them, but corporate and business environments are not going to re-tool and retrain everyone for a total paradigm shift on the way you use an interface that has been in place since 1994. ...especially on an O/S that was not designed to be used with a mouse in the first place. Everything takes 2-3 more clicks to find and use. Ain't gonna happen. HUGE MS blunder. I see your point completely =) I honestly am not that fussy. As long as it works, and is fast/has good specs, I'm happy. Windows 8 just happened to come with this laptop, but so far, no complaints. Listen to at least the first 3 minutes or so. ALL TRUE. I boot in 14 seconds and have no page file, no file indexing, no system restore, no scheduled tasks, few services, and One startup Item. Average is 15 startup items, 15 schedule tasks, 5 times more services, File indexing, page filing, and system restore writes. |

Quoting: amywood71605 Ive had ppl recommend that before, but honestly I have never, ever used or tried it. Just makes me nervous =) I have my old laptop still - maybe I'll try it on that one first? How different from windows is it? It is different in the sense that it is new, but you should become familiar with it in no time. I am partial to linux mint [link to linuxmint.com] If it's an older computer, I would install linux mint MATE. My spouse has an old laptop from 2006 that runs linux mint MATE (it's less resource hungry). If it's a newer computer, linux mint cinnamon, is more aesthetically pleasing. GNU/Linux has come a long way. Installation is as easy as inserting a disk into the disk drive and clicking through the menus that are presented, and once installed it can be easier to use than Windows for most tasks. ok, thanks for answering. I'll def. think about trying it with my other laptop. I don't want to say "old" laptop because it's only 1 1/2 years old. I tend to get a new laptop pretty often =) Would Linux be too hard or ok for my 9 year old to use though? My "old" laptop is pretty much going to be his now to use for homework, games, etc. He is very familiar with windows...but also very smart with technology stuff, and learns quick. Just want to make sure it'd be ok for him too. Games may or may not be an issue. That is one area of support that has not come a long way. STEAM is going to stat supporting linux. As far as homework, are you asking about office software similar to Microsoft Office? Have you ever heard of LibreOffice? It's free and available for all operating systems. If you installed linux mint it would be included with the installation. Here is the LibreOffice website [link to www.libreoffice.org (secure)] Most tasks that people do on their computer can be performed on a linux machine. Moreover, Linux is more stable, secure, and free. Yes, I meant something similar to MS Office =) His teacher doesn't require that program, but since that is what I use, it is what he most familiar with for typing stuff. If I decide to try Linux on this other laptop, and it doesn't work out, am I able to switch it back to Windows? Sorry for all the questions.... Anonymous Coward User ID: 26993662 United States 02/09/2013 11:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been using Windows 8 for a couple months now. I didn't like it at first but now that I know my way around it, its not bad. I'm on a desktop computer and Windows 8 is much faster than Windows 7. Forget Linux. While Ubuntu and other Linux distros are making it easier for people to use, they still require you to learn terminal commands. I tried Ubuntu and Linux Mint for about a year. They both suck. It takes a lot of terminal use to get something to work right, such as a wireless printer. Linux also made my pc run much hotter than if I was in Windows. Most of the Linux programs you install after setting up your Linux OS, are crappy and buggy. They look and run like Windows 95 programs. If Linux was such a great OS, why isn't it the most widely used and supported OS? Stay with Windows if you don't want a headache. |

Floobarb the Argnorf User ID: 26218433 United States 02/09/2013 11:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Don't listen to all these tards who fear change. Windows 8 is the bomb once you get used to it. From a user interface perspective the major change is the start screen. But also: Learn to use the charms bar to make accessing resources faster. From the Start screen, you can just start typing the name of a resource to access it in search, no need to click on the search charm first. In multi-monitor the taskbar can be repeated on all monitors (I use 3) so for example if you are watching a video full screen in your primary monitor, all the task bar icons for open programs are replicated in the secondary monitor so you can raise those windows in the second monitor without having to shrink the video in the primary monitor. In a metro app, click at the top of the screen and drag your mouse (or finger) to the bottom of the screen to close (shut-down) the metro app. Humm..what else from a UI perspective.....
