This doesn't surprise me at all. Back when my kids were still in the house, I would go shopping once a week and buy tons of stuff. But then, we would decide to go out one night or we didn't want what I had planned on cooking (mainly because a processed boxed food was quicker to cook than from scratch). So, lettuce, fruit, veggies, stale chips, moldy bread, sour milk, moldy cheese - lots of food disposed of weekly.

I've been only cooking whole foods the past eight months. I purchase no processed foods. The kids are away at college so it's just my husband and myself. I have a new Fresh Market which went in just about a mile from my house which I drive by daily on the way home from work. I find that if I shop more often and only buy what I need for one or two days, I don't throw much of anything away.

My oldest moved out, 19, but I still have a 16 and 12 year old boys and very little is ever wasted...I tend to cook too much, especially soups and we get tired of eating it...but teen boys are great for consuming food...
