Enigmatic "Ribbon" Of Energy Discovered by NASA Satellite Explained
by Staff Writers
Durham NH (SPX) Feb 07, 2013

After three years of puzzling over a striking "ribbon" of energy and particles discovered by NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) at the edge of our solar system, scientists may be on the verge of cracking the mystery...

..."If the theory is correct," Schwadron notes, "the ribbon can be used to tell us how we're moving through the magnetic fields of the interstellar medium and how those magnetic fields then influence our space environment."...

..This may have important ramifications for the history and future of radiation in space, and its impact here on Earth, as the heliosphere changes in response to changing conditions in the interstellar medium or the "space between the stars."...

...According to the retention theory, the ribbon exists in a special location where neutral hydrogen atoms from the solar wind move across the local galactic magnetic field. Neutral atoms are not affected by magnetic fields, but when their electrons get stripped away they become charged ions and begin to gyrate rapidly around magnetic field lines.

That rapid rotation creates waves or vibrations in the magnetic field, and the charged ions then become trapped by the waves. This is the process that creates the ribbon.
...

...This is the nature of the new ribbon model. The ribbon is a region where particles, originally from the solar wind, become trapped or 'retained' due to intense waves and vibrations in the magnetic field."...

...Although the retention theory may check all the boxes, the IBEX team is still far from claiming that the ribbon is fully explained.

Re: The Retention Theory - Enigmatic "Ribbon" Of Energy Seen by IBEX at Edge of Solar System - Explained
Thread: Magnetism not only Powers the most Energetic form of Light in the known Universe, but Structures it out of Chaos.
WASHINGTON -- A new supercomputer simulation shows the collision of two neutron stars can naturally produce the magnetic structures thought to power the high-speed particle jets associated with short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The study provides the most detailed glimpse of the forces driving some of the universe's most energetic explosions.

The state-of-the-art simulation ran for nearly seven weeks on the Damiana computer cluster at the Albert Einstein Institute (AEI) in Potsdam, Germany. It traces events that unfold over 35 milliseconds -- about three times faster than the blink of an eye.

GRBs are among the brightest events known, emitting as much energy in a few seconds as our entire galaxy does in a year. Most of this emission comes in the form of gamma rays, the highest-energy form of light.

"For the first time, we've managed to run the simulation well past the merger and the formation of the black hole," said Chryssa Kouveliotou, a co-author of the study at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. "This is by far the longest simulation of this process, and only on sufficiently long timescales does the magnetic field grow and reorganize itself from a chaotic structure into something resembling a jet."

GRBs longer than two seconds are the most common type and are widely thought to be triggered by the collapse of a massive star into a black hole. As matter falls toward the black hole, some of it forms jets in the opposite direction that move near the speed of light. These jets bore through the collapsing star along its rotational axis and produce a blast of gamma rays after they emerge. Understanding short GRBs, which fade quickly, proved more elusive. Astronomers had difficulty obtaining precise positions for follow-up studies.

That began to change in 2004, when NASA's Swift satellite began rapidly locating bursts and alerting astronomers where to look.

"For more than two decades, the leading model of short GRBs was the merger of two neutron stars," said co-author Bruno Giacomazzo at the University of Maryland and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Only now can we show that the merger of neutron stars actually produces an ultrastrong magnetic field structured like the jets needed for a GRB."

Here is a little after the discovered the ribbon.

Thread: New Info from Edge of Solar System
(Shown in a Hubble Space Telescope image, the "astrosphere" around the star L.L. Orionis approximates the heliosphere around our solar system.)

:astrosph:

Mission scientists got their first surprise six months after launch, once the spacecraft had scanned enough overlapping strips of sky to create a complete 360° map. Instead of recording a relatively even distribution all the way around, as expected, IBEX found that the counts of ENAs — and thus the strength of the interaction in the heliosheath — varied dramatically from place to place. The detectors even discovered a long, enhanced “ribbon,” accentuated by an especially intense hotspot or “knot,” arcing across the sky. (IBEX Explores Galactic Frontier, Releases First-Ever All-Sky Map)

Now scientists have finished assembling a second complete sweep around the sky, and IBEX has again delivered an unexpected result: the map has changed significantly. Overall, the intensity of ENAs has dropped 10% to 15%, and the hotspot has diminished and spread out along the ribbon. Details of these findings appear in the September 27th issue of Journal of Geophysical Research (Space Physics).

“We thought we might detect small changes occurring gradually throughout the Sun’s 11-year-long activity cycle, but not over just 6 months,” notes David McComas (Southwest Research Institute), principal investigator for the IBEX mission and the paper’s lead author. “These observations show that the interaction of the Sun with the interstellar medium is far more dynamic and variable than anyone envisioned.”

From Visual #6

The IBEX science team compares the first and second maps to reveal whether there are time variations in the Ribbon or the more distributed emissions around the ribbon. This animation fades between the first and second IBEX maps. We see that the first and second maps are relatively similar. However, there are significant time variations as well. These time variations are forcing scientists to try to understand how the heliosphere can be changing so rapidly.
[link to www.nasa.gov]

From Visual #7

One of the clear features visible in the IBEX maps is an apparent knot in the ribbon. Scientists were anxious to see how this structure would change with time. The second map showed that the knot in the ribbon somehow spread out. It is as if the knot in the ribbon was literally untangled over only 6 months! This visualization shows a close-up of the ribbon (green and red) superimposed on the stars and constellations in the nighttime sky. The animation begins by looking toward the nose of the heliosphere and then pans up and left to reveal the knot. The twisted structure superimposed on the map is an artist's conception of the tangled up ribbon. The animation then shows this structure untangling as we fade into the second map of the heliosphere.

From Visual #10

The changes in the size of our solar system’s boundaries also cause changes to the galactic cosmic rays that enter the solar system. Although these boundaries do a good job of deflecting the majority of harmful galactic radiation, some fraction of this galactic radiation always makes it into the solar system. When the boundaries shrink in size and the solar wind becomes weaker, galactic cosmic rays have a much easier time gaining access into the inner solar system. In contrast, when the solar wind becomes more powerful, the boundaries inflate and galactic cosmic rays have a harder time penetrating into the solar system. The discovery by IBEX reported here is consistent with inward falling of the boundaries surrounding the solar system. This should allow more galactic radiation to enter the solar system. This animation shows changes in the boundaries around our solar system as they deflate and inflate with time. The fast moving galactic cosmic rays are shown coming in from all directions. When the boundaries deflate, more of the cosmic rays make it into the inner solar system, increasing the radiation levels throughout the solar system.

Oh, nice! And all condensing towards the knot area (?).

There is not enough information they let out about this stuff.

Is the knot the area of where the ribbon...oh, wait.

Our heliosphere hits the perpendicular running magnetic fields, and changes neutral energies (dormant energies), and creates polarity of those neutral energies. This is what the ribbon is, a form of pinch. But at this point, the pinch is strung along the wide arc of the front area of helio. The more the helio is immersed within this new highly magnetized region, the more neutral energies are being polarized. As this increases, 'condensation' (as you worded it) becomes stronger and stronger, and begins organizing itself. The knot would be an accumulation point as it is probably where the front 'bowshock' was thought to occur. It would be the center point of the rapidly manifesting pinch.

VERY interesting thought here.

Thank you Sweden.

voyager 1 and 2 both flew either side of the ribbon missing it completely. the magnetic bubbles they are currently traversing are the result of the solar winds rotational pattern extending from the Sun to the end of the heliosphere. the solar wind are piling up at the edge of the solar system. here the spin caused by the solar wind are creating magnetic bubbles. the bubbles capture intraspace cosmic rays etc... the compressed solar winds creating the magnetic foam in turn collects and reflects solar proton. the proton that are ionized are bounce back towards the Sun.

the interaction between the magnetic foam and the ribbon remains a mystery but they do interact. they are in a cycle of building energy and rapidly releasing it.

I believe our use of electricity is causing substantial increase in the Sun.

The flow is always going to be no more then the smallest point. If that point happened to be our Ionosphere, we are short circuiting a large cycle.

Who is to say the gravitational center of any large astral body won't flow electricity back to the Sun?

For a society that knows an assumption is wrong, we sure do make a LOT of assumptions when dealing with science and the bigger picture.
