Very true op Quoting: tayto 5*'s for the reality check its the ones we dont know about Think they ever heard of magnets to deflect those unknown rocks of metal? The scenario I've always envisioned would be to use lasers that are used by the US for ICBM defense (Star Wars) would be turned outbound to the asteroid. Unless the asteroid is tumbling uncontrollably, shooting a high- energy laser at a fixed point on the surface would vaporize the rock, creating a jet of ionized gas to shift the trajectory slightly. There are eggheads in Space Command who can calculate this shit in their sleep, and computers that can recalculate trajectory and the impact point on earth. The lasers can only work when the asteroid is close enough ... not enough to make it miss the earth, but enough to nudge the asteroid so it hits a different target on earth, like your enemy. . Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33508203 a 5000 yard wide one on the other hand, well.... First of all, the rock in Friday's near miss is 150' wide. It could EASILY knock out a large city, or cause mass histeria even by striking a vacant land mass. And the government would have any number of reasons to withhold information. Here's another scenario: The US federal govt would change the trajectory to hit the US at a specific point as an excuse to cancel or delay National Debt payback. Just like Japan and the tsunami. Come on, don't be so naive! . Bucephelus |

Calculating asteroid strikes is done by percentages to have a way out if they're wrong. If the path is wrong, it's easily deniable by simply saying they didn't calculate for mass, the moon's gravity, etc. . Bucephelus |

The governments are not the only ones with eyes on the skies so to speak. In fact the majority of stuff like comets and whatnot are discovered by amateurs, they're always on the lookout for objects because they get named after whoever spots them first. Not if it's redirected at the last minute. Orbital "star wars" Defense satellites only have a range of 20,000 miles or so to hit ground-based or airborne ICBMs. Asteroid 2012 DA14, scheduled for a near-miss on Friday, is calculated to traveling at 12,427 to 18,641 mph. That's about an hour away from US laser platforms. Again, just blame the miscalculation on the moon's gravity ... . Last Edited by Bucephelus on 02/10/2013 04:58 PM Bucephelus |

And set off the super-volcano there in Yellowstone? That would be like using an earthquake to set off a tsunami to then cause the worst nuclear accident ever ... . I hope I'm not right but I think this asteroid may be used as an opportunity for some kind of disaster, we wont be 100% percent sure of its trajectory because anything can happen from now until then...ANYTHING...and even if it doesn't hit Earth it can take out some satellites and do some damage. And still there is another option....a man-made event/disaster that can be blamed on the asteroid. Just keeping an opened mind to all possibilities. |

That is all fine and well - but there are ways of suppressing information and this could 'easily' be suppressed or swept under the rug to exploit an opportunistic event that normally would require another catalyst. Just playing devils advocate here! |
