Spiders are not being rained down, they are stationary or crawling in the nest. A largenest mind you, perhaps 3 or 4 feet square by the looks of it.

The behavior is called "ballooning" when the spiders have hatched and grown a bit.. they will eat most of the insects in an area, therefore they have to move to new areas. They do this by climbing to the tops of trees, bushes poles etc and release a long fluffy strand of silk into the wind. when the lift is high enough they let go and the wind blows them along to new areas. This was exactly that. There was a bumper crop of spiders in that area.. but i bet no crop pests.
