Apophis The Asteroid That May be a Threat To Earth... NOT DA14 | |

However, a possibility remained that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole, a small region no more than about 800 m (half a mile) wide, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. The diameter of Apophis is approximately 325 metres (1,066 ft). As of the December 29, 2012 observation arc, the probability of an April 13, 2036 impact is considered to be 1 in 11,000,000. Apophis? That's an extinction level event - 2012 DA14 is nothing compared to that... Doom is like a drug, people need a regular fix of imminent demise, as long as they don't actually get doom (then it's complaining about lack of emergency services support and power). DA14 is what scientists and NASA call "useful" since the more info they can get on a close pass, the better they can calculate and model real threats later. Not to mention how we might capture and mine these things in future. We should be watching the results after the flyby (if they get released). |
