Re: Why is contemporary Christian music so lame?
I have thought about this and the only thing I have come to mind is that the modern music represents the modern corruption.
The world creates what the world deserves. The world no longer deserves meaningful artistic expression to praise God and that is why it is fairly absent in the modern thing called the church.

I do not think the spirit has totally left creation yet as one can still commune with God in nature where the nature hasn't been totally corrupted.

The church as a whole seems devoid of spirit to me, the people gossip and join cliques, the spirit of rejection is common place. Maybe now as I am older do I recognize it as a child I did not... but I do think it is prevalent to a higher extent than before.

When is the last time you have seen someone holding a door open for an elder? Taking time out to talk to someone who is lonely, carry groceries for someone, help someone in need?
Not to common.

Now you just tithe and the money supposedly goes to Africa, Haiti and never your own backyard where you might have to get your own hands dirty.
Instead it is taken out of your hands, sanitized.
I often wonder if Jesus today walked into a church would the fervent lala zombies reject him?

I haven't opened my bible after I noticed it was printed in a factory, it has a Trade-Mark.
Who knows who in time before has altered the original text to benefit a specific political or social idea?

Compassion, I have some for those around me, just not so much sending a check to a foreign land. How am I supposed to know where it winds up?
If my spirit is not moved by repetitive lyrics on a movie screen I cannot delude myself into saying it is because I have no faith.
Neither does the cookie cutter junk on the radio move me, it is nothing but suggestive noise anymore.

I believe in God but I also know praying *extra* hard won't change outcomes, nor having absolute faith.
Free will is giving to us for a reason and it takes will and discernment to use it properly. Maybe this is what was meant by God helps those who help themselves *and others*.

Sorry about the ramble.

Re: Why is contemporary Christian music so lame?
Yeah it's really bad. Nothing comes close to the all time christian greats, Beethoven's Ode to Joy, Handel's messiah and arguably Amazing Grace.

Back before John Wimber died and the vineyard christian fellowship went cultish, they had a pretty good music ministry based around a kind of west coast pop vibe, simple three chord guitar music and what not. At least you would never hear a drum machine unlike all the modern drivel.

There are some local, church based music ministries that are very good, but you would never hear that on christian radio.

In my mind Ode to Joy, is what christian music should be. Driving, moving and climactic, giving you a sense of God's incredible glory, instead of being whiny, plaintive and sounding like 80s pop. I think that song is probably the greatest song ever composed, and I don't even like classical music.

I think Led Zeppelin is satan's version of what God's music is really about. Probably stuff that the devil actually heard or helped compose in heaven. Interestingly some of their best tunes were remakes of some old time gospel blues music. That particular genre has some interesting sounds, and really was the root of the blues and later rock in some ways.

Amazing Grace, Holy Holy Holy, How great thou art,
And the circle will be unbroken. Songs with a real message and structure.

People once put effort into keeping a note, reading the music, staying on key.

And today we have watered down muzak where any trendy type strum a guitar, not actual chords, a cracked voice soccer mom crooning and the lyrics go like this.
"You are worthy, lalalala, worthy and amazing, lalalalal, worthy, lalalala...." and so on.

lala

Just kind of a mash up, no real effort at all. God is a creator and he instilled in his creation the ability to create so why not?
Why just plumb through it?

Maybe someone can help me out with this. It seems not only is culture today generally being dumbed down but the church is being filtered as well.

Thanks.

As a musician I'll take a shot at this one. The problem is called, "the church'. I played lead and sang for a spiritual band that played coffee houses and festivals, but when we started approaching churches we were informed that our music was too edgy and challenging. Read that to mean: we don't want to offend anyone with what we play here, and we need for it to be generic and muted so our band can play it.

I agree with you: I'd rather hear Amazing Grace on bagpipes any day than 99% of the Jesus-pop out there.

Because it's a socially conservative religion (at least in its popular form) which renders the would-be artists in its flock to be stymied intellectually and creatively.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33604512

Homogenized and watered down to the point of having no meaning.
Most of the songs seem to make jesus out to be some sort of boyfriend or something.
Maybe it is directed toward the soccer mom types to make them feel good about the life choices they made.
If you subtract the lyrics do you tap your feet to the beat?

CCM/Contemporary Christian Music-Muzak is lame no doubt.

If one is going to praise god then at least do it to the best of ones ability... not this meek drip, drip, drip non-stimulating non threatening junk.
It isn't reflective of real life but more akin to some alternative feel good dimension.

Re: Why is contemporary Christian music so lame?
It isn't true music becuase mainstream christian worship isn't true. The songs are meaningless because church is meaningless. The songs have no feeling, because they are contrived from indocrination rooted in the pages of a book that was made in the church's propaganda by king james and his predecessor.

Christian songs aren't free to be about anything and everything that inspires the writer. THe songs all have to tie into the theme of god/jesus. Country music in the same way has also suffered from the same recycled lyrical themes. Real music is free, like the world. Artists that can't compose worth a dam infest the Christian music scene because if they were any good they would expand from the genre.

Christians seem to think that prayer is something you do with your hands with your eyes closed, and that worship is sitting in a bench reading bible verses. Why wouldn't Christians think that whatever crap their christian radio station was playing was honoring god? The music is about god, therefore good for their souls. No matter how boring the music is, the song being about god makes it viable listening.

That is why I replied to this thread. I was searching the subject and it popped up.
Far easier to write a check and send it over the pond to god literally knows where into some strangers hands.
I like how OP mentioned no one wants to get their hands dirty in the local community. Picking up trash, helping out the elderly and simply talking to them and the lonely.
No preachy preachy, just being a human being with respect and not bragging about it.
The golden rule right?
Mozart comes to mind... an amazing artist that shreds the distance of time due to his amazing ability... he is giving TRUE glory with his gift. Did he water down and hold back his gift so someones padded little bubble wouldn't pop?
No.
The CCM and Mainstream Radio Music of all types does not reflect reality, it offers zero challenge. The same goes for the christian movies of today... they exist in an alternate dimension where no one smokes, swears, drinks, has sex, etc.
It is perfectly safe.
Real people encounter real challenges... and when real people cannot relate to the safe world of CCM and the modern church they tend leave.

It isn't infused with anything at all. It is Muzak like the stuff in the elevator.
It doesn't have any vibe or spirit. Just background noise.

I am not bashing the church just pointing out what I feel and others my age feel. It is empty.

Re: Why is contemporary Christian music so lame?
This subject is one of my pet peeves. It seems like what they call "praise songs" have taken over most Churches.

What I notice about this is the mindless repetition of certain words or phrases. Almost like a mantra.

Contrast that with the hymns that told a story or have many verses all with different words.

We have raised a generation that has no idea what the old hymns are. And that is sad.

"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking".

You get what I am saying then. When I have attended recently I have to get up and walk around the church or outside while they "worship" and wave hands around to the...
"Love me lord x 10 repetitions, lalalala *literally la la la*, we praise you x 5, we worship you x 5..."
And so on.
The instrumentals are half assed. The lead vocal is always some nasally whiny type with no effort, pops her note transitions.
Very hard to get into that... it is alien in fact.
Brainwashing or something.

Maybe it is everything. Seems like the whole world is comfortable with mediocrity.
It is as if Rembrandt would hold back with his gift in fear of offending and instead painted stick figures or something... to appeal to everyone instead of sparking the light in the one and making them go, "Wow".

If no obstacles exist then how does one grow?

Most Christian music today is not "birthed" out of a life that really loves God! It's purely commercial, nothing more.

That's why when you take time to actually go through the lyrics of these songs, there's no real substance to them.

It's different with hymns, there's really much more substance to them, and you really get the impression the lyricist laboured very hard to write them.

Idiot!
Miley Cyrus is just as mainstream radio as Contemporary Christian Music is.
Did you not read what I am trying to explain?

It is all filtered crap for various purposes. A false selection that is presented as all that exists.

A_ Radio Pop/Rock/Hip Hop *Where Miley fits in*
B_ Radio Christian *The subject of this thread*
C_ Radio Country

Real music exists outside the false flooded choices.

I have pointed this out in several congregations and the answer I get is that the Music should not distract from the Message.
Ugh. OK. What message am I supposed to get from
"Worthy of our praise, Lalalalal, Amazingly Worthy...".

I think this is an actual takeover to neuter the Church, to lull them in and put them to sleep rather than really waking up.

I don't know but I do know it doesn't feel spiritual or right in any way, it feels dead.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15831138

you have a point OP. I have a unique perspective because I have played on praise team for 12 years. Have played guitar for more than 30 years. The parts are so formulaic it's annoying true. However I think a lot has to do with your experiences to different churches. There is some decent, different music out there. (yt of a song our team did about 6 years ago for Christmas production below). But some of it feels culty true enough. I just left the team I've been on with the baddest musicians around. Seating 3000 people, full lights monitor systems etc. Funny, the younger guitar players always have to have so much delay and they try so hard to sound like hillsong. lol.
still there are moving songs, with heart and no one can say the black gospel artists aren't killing it.
