‘Dangerous’ asteroid may miss Earth but it could take out your phone
laugh

London, February 11(ANI): An asteroid due to whizz past the Earth on Friday may not ‘destroy London’ – but it could take out vital telecommunications satellites, scientists have warned.

Though scientists are sure that there is no chance of the 150ft (45.7m) wide space rock hitting the Earth, they fear that it could collide with one of more than 100 telecommunication and weather satellites in fixed orbits above the Earth, the Telegraph reported.

The asteroid, 2012 DA14, which was detected in February last year by La Sagra Observatory in southern Spain, is predicted to reach its nearest point to the Earth at around 7.30pm UK time on Friday.

i read that the guy who discovered the asteroid is a dentist, how come a dentist in spain found this astroid and not Nasa ??

i think thats really odd

But if the asteroid -which was only discovered by a Spanish dentist in February last year - did ever hit Earth in the distant future, it is estimated that it would produce a blast the equivalent of 2.5 megatons of TNT - - enough to flatten a large area but not globally catastrophic

I may be wrong but the last time I was seriously following this kind of stuff NASA only had enough funding to monitor something like 3% of the sky at any given time. Thusly, they rely heavily on the observations of amateur and other private school and personal astronomy groups. Astronomy is more of a collaborative science than most. I mean really there is so much going on out there and we are so infinitesimally small to the universe all you have to do is be the right guy with a telescope pointed at the right spot in the sky and claim it first and boom, you are a Spanish dentist who just discovered an asteroid.

U.S. Space Surveillance Network uses radar to track more than s (ten centimeters). This celestial clutter includes everything from the International Space Station (ISS) and the Hubble Space Telescope to defunct satellites, rocket stages, or nuts and bolts left behind by astronauts. And there are millions of smaller, harder-to-track objects such as flecks of paint and bits of plastic.

Asteroid 2012 DA14, which will whiz within 17,000 miles or so of Earth on Feb 15. The asteroid’s relatively close trajectory on its latest pass of Earth has been extensively covered in recent weeks.

The biggest asteroid to hit the Earth this century was in Siberia on June 30, 1908. The rock was about 100,000 tons and the size of a large house. It shattered in the air, while about four miles from the ground, creating an explosion 2,000 times stronger than an atomic bomb! It demolished thousands of square miles of forestation.

The official discovery announcement from the company which provided the grant for the telescope says nothing about dentists?

[link to www.lasagraskysurvey.org]

[link to www.planetary.org]

The strategy paid off. With the new CCD telescope camera configured to shoot rapid, short exposures, Nomen and his colleagues captured 2012 DA14 as it moved across the sky at almost 11 arcseconds per minute. This is slower than a satellite but quite fast for a NEO. It's equivalent to a lunar diameter every three hours. The asteroid was already heading away from Earth after passing the planet about a week before, and at much greater distance than next year's encounter. Its path across the eastern sky, fast angular motion, quite faint (and fading) brightness, and high declination (far above the ecliptic plane in which most of the planets travel) could easily have allowed 2012 DA14 to escape undetected.

[link to www.planetary.org]

Jaime Nomen represents the La Sagra Observatory (J75) and the La Sagra Sky Survey (LSSS) on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The LSSS is the most prolific European near-Earth object survey of all time. Only the three major NASA-funded surveys (Catalina, LINEAR, and Spacewatch) and the now-defunct WISE space mission score more discoveries than LSSS does.

Some are saying it won't hit because we have been told about it.

Nasa didn't say anything about it. It was someone in Spain.

Either they are useless at detecting or they were trying to keep it hidden.

Doesn't look good either way.

Even Nasa had to reluctantly agree it could hit satellites.

According to this psychic, its not a collusion with the 'asteroid' thats going to take away your phone lines, but because this red comet is going to play around with Earth's gravity:
>
Q. On a different psychic site I read that technology will be knocked off the grid for awhile and we should prepare by stocking up on food and water. Do you see this happening? If so, When?
A-I still see March of this year, this is when we are going to notice technology not being reliable. I do not see it as being completely wiped off, I just see it as being inconsistent. Like you might use your phone and it work fine, and then an hour later it cannot find a signal...and I see that with cars..anything electrical.
