i read that the guy who discovered the asteroid is a dentist,how come a dentist in spain found this astroid and not Nasa ??

But if the asteroid -which was only discovered by a Spanish dentist in February last year - did ever hit Earth in the distant future, it is estimated that it would produce a blast the equivalent of 2.5 megatons of TNT - - enough to flatten a large area but not globally catastrophic

what i reckon is Nasa knew about this asteroid and comet Ison and other things decades ago,they keep the public ignorant and only admit to the TRUTH when some amateur astronomer makes a bit to much noise

It would be funny to see all the 'now' generation running round trying to figure out wtf just happened. Not good for circumstances where you may actually need it. I'm sure they'd be able to bounce off other satellites though.

yeah but this asteroid is just the start,we are entering a part of space jammed with asteroids ,comets ect,join the dots

what a load of bull shit lol nasa can only check a small amount of the sky, there are millions of amature and semi pro watchers out there. Wh is more likly to catch somethink?? a few hundred or millions?

there are thousands and thousands of undiscovered roids and comets out there.

I may be wrong but the last time I was seriously following this kind of stuff NASA only had enough funding to monitor something like 3% of the sky at any given time. Thusly, they rely heavily on the observations of amateur and other private school and personal astronomy groups. Astronomy is more of a collaborative science than most. I mean really there is so much going on out there and we are so infinitesimally small to the universe all you have to do is be the right guy with a telescope pointed at the right spot in the sky and claim it first and boom, you are a Spanish dentist who just discovered an asteroid.

The strategy paid off. With the new CCD telescope camera configured to shoot rapid, short exposures, Nomen and his colleagues captured 2012 DA14 as it moved across the sky at almost 11 arcseconds per minute. This is slower than a satellite but quite fast for a NEO. It's equivalent to a lunar diameter every three hours. The asteroid was already heading away from Earth after passing the planet about a week before, and at much greater distance than next year's encounter. Its path across the eastern sky, fast angular motion, quite faint (and fading) brightness, and high declination (far above the ecliptic plane in which most of the planets travel) could easily have allowed 2012 DA14 to escape undetected.
