Did this last week at 5 different gas stations and guess what?

It only filled the 1 "gallon" of gas only filled up 3/4ths of the gallon milk jug.

We are being cheated not only by unexplainable soaring gas prices, but we aren't even getting what we are supposedly paying for.

Fucking bullshit.

Makes me wonder... I did that once with a 2l coke bottle at a 7/11. I was out of gas and it was all I had. The lady in the store came running out and informed me it was against the law to pump into anything but an approved can. She was like in a panic which I couldn't grasp at the time. Her reaction didn't seem to fit the situation. She made me buy a gerry can inside.

Now I guess I know why.

Well milk doesn't go all the way to the top of the jug either.. May I suggest using a regular gas can after making a 1 gallon fill line in it?

We have a big yard. My husband just has one fairly small red gas jug
He takes a gallon jug with him, too.

Some stations it won't even fill to 3/4!!!

Burns his shorts to get gas now

easier more practical less suspicious way of doing this

use a regular jar.

fill it up a litre

go home and measure it.

Yeah why the hell would they do it? Damn thats really hard to imagine. I'm not sure, but maybe a reason is .... money?

temperature matters too
volumes are generally corrected to 15 degrees Celsius.

If gas temp less than 15 and assume it is metered properly, you will get more gas.

If greater than 15 you get less.

In Canada there is a regulator that tests for octane and quantity. If a pump meters wrong big fine. Octane too.

I've been noticing that fillups at certain stations 'last longer' than at others, my guess is adulteration with alcohols or other lower BTU fuels.

Badly worded, what I meant what that the fillups that last longer are not adulterated.

You could be right OP, but no gas station should let you use a milk jug. Then again I live in NJ and we don't pump our own gas.

In Toronto, this used to be a big problem. Some gov agecy drove around in specially equipped cars that measured the actual amount, temperature corrected. They closed down a few stations, including one on Danforth ave.

The station operators can manipulate the pumps if they want to, but I would be more weary of older type pumps and full serve stations. This is where they caught all the people last time, all full serve.

gas cans are made of certain kinds of plastic that won't react. While preparing a bonfire this past fall, I used a red plastic cup to pour some gas into to pitch it up the woodpile.....the plastic cup held firm for a few seconds then violently melted....gas going all over me. Would a milk jug melt or actually hold the gas?

I think the plastic of a milk jug is sensative to gasoline. It makes the plastic weak and, over time, will even melt it.

The gas goes in, weakens the structure, the plastic stretches just a little due to aformentioned weakness, and -WALA! you can put more than a gallon in the jug!

cheers
