easier more practical less suspicious way of doing this

use a regular jar.

fill it up a litre

go home and measure it.

also pumps often state minimum delivery 2 litres..

Utter bull shit. The fumes would be plenty strong near the surface and there is no way to put the wick into the liquid without going throuh the fumes.

was you there bro?

I dont think so...

Have you ever tried?

prolly not...

funny how arm chair quarter backs know everything by sitting online with zero experience outside in the real world.

Im not the only one who has tried something of this nature...

skip back a page and you will see

i have shown people on many occasion that you can put a lit cigarette out in petrol. but still, i wouldn't recommend your average idiot try this.

What they should do is sell it by weight. But that would be difficult to do. Seems to work well for aviation.

Re: temperature difference- The gas in the underground tank never reaches 90 degrees or below freezing. Like a cave, the temp is nearly constant.

You can drop a cigarette into a container of gas and the only thing that happens is the cig goes out, and then is too soggy to finish smoking. Add a secondary ignition source at the vapors from the cig hitting the gas, then you have fire.

You may leave gas in the hose and nozzle, but it was full when you started, as long as some pincher ahead of you didn't drain it. If you're a hose drainer, you're stealing from the next person to buy gas.

Pumps I use pump a real gallon, I know because I use a windshield washer fluid jug for my weedeater gas, they've never melted but they do get brittle over several months. Sunlight I think.

If you get shorted at the pumps, your state Weights and Measures is who to call, they check ours all the time.

Why does the govt thinks the new cans with no vent is better? They build pressure, swell up, and mine can shoot it's pretty yellow cap at least 10 feet. So much for containing fumes.

The way some of you carry on about gas, I have little doubt it would be banned before hitting the market if it was invented tomorrow.

We have a big yard. My husband just has one fairly small red gas jug
He takes a gallon jug with him, too.

Some stations it won't even fill to 3/4!!!

Burns his shorts to get gas now

Re: Here is a test for you GLPers. Take a empty milk gallon to the gas station and pump one gallon into it.
I don't know about anywhere else but in Texas you can pump gas into your pocket if you want to and no one will say a word to you, I have put gas in all kinds of containers over the decades. It is not legal but no one cares.

If you put gas from a pump into a white plastic(HDPE) milk jug it will "relax" a bit and sort of bulge a little and hold more than a gallon.

I store my saw/weedeater gas in 3 liter coke bottles, have for years cause they are tough as nails, it will also hold over 100 psi of air pressure and a 2 liter will hold close to 200psi, I've seen go to 210psi before bursting. This is dangerous btw.

My Husqvarna chainsaws WILL NOT run on 89 octane fuel so I would know quickly if it were being pumped from the "super" pump I buy from.

If I bought some plywood that was "out of square" I would be pissed, I am not doubting it but it will suck. A "2x4" has not been 2" x 4" for many years, who does not know that? And I have not seen any cured, kiln dried, lumber for many years...I wish I knew where to buy some I hate this green shit we have here in east Texas.

If you use super unleaded in your 2 stroke equipment and put in a little Fuel-Medic™ it will start in the spring, the guy at the saw shop tells me it has less ethanol, with turns to a simple sugar after a short while and clogs the small screens and jets in the carb and I have found that to be true....very true carb kits for everything was a normal spring routine around here.

Tuned correctly, a vehicle will get better mileage running a higher octane fuel.

The lack of common sense and real life knowledge displayed on the site is scary..... very scary. I feel sorry for people who live in compact cities. I think only landowners should vote.

The people at the station cannot manipulate the meter without opening the pump itself. There should be a sticker on every pump from your state's Dept. of Agriculture, Consumer Services or the like stating the date the last accuracy measurement was taken on the pump. If the seal is broken, the pump has been gone into since the last inspection. I was just pumping gas the other day and saw an inspector filling up a container and measuring for accuracy. Its not like the towelheads inside the store can just turn a knob and fuck you.

Makes me wonder... I did that once with a 2l coke bottle at a 7/11. I was out of gas and it was all I had. The lady in the store came running out and informed me it was against the law to pump into anything but an approved can. She was like in a panic which I couldn't grasp at the time. Her reaction didn't seem to fit the situation. She made me buy a gerry can inside.

Now I guess I know why.

if you were being cheated on how much gas you are getting, odds are the woman at the store wouldnt even know about it. What she would know is that fuels are corrosive, and if you hopped in your rig with a plastic pop bottle full of gas you might not get where you were going. I know that furnace oil will melt through a pop jug in a few minutes. Found that out the hard way, and made a mess in the process. She was in a panic because she would not want to be liable if your car blew up on the ride home, or if fumes leaked while you were driving causing you to become disoriented and crash and kill people. Not saying there isnt a conspiracy here, just saying the woman has every right to be in a panic over filling a pop bottle with gasoline.

Remember the old days when you would run out of gas and you made to to the gas station and they always had a gallon gas can for you to borrow? Then they started making you pay a charge on the can. Now they just don't have them any more. Most times they've got hot dogs, adult magazines, dog treats, candy, soda BOOZE, etc but no gas cans, even to buy. At gas stations!

I pumped gas through most of my high school days (the 70's). We washed your windshield, checked ALL the fluids under the hood and filled tires with air. Even for a couple of dollars worth of gas. Jackasses would come in when it was pouring rain or blizzarding (Chicago) and have us do all that. We had ways to get them back. "You're down a quart of oil", OK, put it in. Grab and empty can, stick the spout in it, fake adding the oil and pocket the money. Hey, at least I never spit in anyone's hamburger. But then I never worked in the food biz either.

temperature matters too
volumes are generally corrected to 15 degrees Celsius.

If gas temp less than 15 and assume it is metered properly, you will get more gas.

If greater than 15 you get less.

In Canada there is a regulator that tests for octane and quantity. If a pump meters wrong big fine. Octane too.
