People on Blood Thinners

I thought it would be something useful, not just for people on blood thinners, but that is what got me searching.

This is my fear, when we are at the cottage it is no mans land and him getting banged up from a fall could be fatal with internal bleeding. I may not be able to help him With that, other than boat across a lake and drive like a mad woman to the hospital.
However for a superficial cut, this stuff I have mentioned would be useful.

Well, retired/ex-nurse, newly graduating one here and what we're learning in class and educating patients on in the clinical setting is avoidance first, calling for help (when help is close), and self-administration of antidotes in situations such as this (user far from help)and teaching family members the use of emergency equipment/fluids they can keep with them...by no means am I suggesting that help shouldn't be sought immediately for fresh frozen plasma, prothrombin concentrates, and blood transfusions as warranted but time is everything in the reversal process, the quicker it is implemented, the better the outcomes. In an external wound described by the OP, mechanical obstruction of flow combined with immediate reversal agents would be helpful, the situation of internal hemorrhage as you described is a far trickier monster as you're well aware.

Most places you can buy "GELFOAM" over the counter at the pharmacy. IT's a foam made up of coagulants. You put it on the wound and the bleeding stops as it melts into the blood. This stuff supplies what the thinner stops the body from producing. But it does it on a "spot" not systemic basis.

Also, injections of Vitamin K will work but take longer.

As his doc if you need an RX for coagulants and which one he recommends using in an emergency. BTW: your relative on thinners should have a med-alert bracelet on so in an emergency paramedics would know to administer certain drugs vs others.

He won't wear the bracelet. I will look up GELFOAM, I haven't heard of it before. Thank you!

A bottle of aspirin would kill your friend.

Someone is on blood thinners for a reason. Taking them off subjects them to stroke or heart attack from blood clots because their heart doesn't work right, which is why they're on the blood thinners.

Yeah, and kill those whose heart doesn't work the way it should.

A cardiologist once told me that Pradaxa won't stop blood from clotting.

next time try some cayenne pepper on the cut, it acctually stops the bleeding. Try it yourself with a small knife/paper cut. Im sure it wont work on wounds were blood is coming out like a water gun

He must have a death wish. Also, I've never heard of Vit C being easy on the stomach, much less being able to protect it.

Yeah when you bleed out... the cut my step father had would NOT stop bleeding. It was almost 2 hours from the time we tried to stop the bleeding while at the cottage, to getting to the hospital and the bleeding was not slowing down.

Psh, his gene pool passing days are long gone.

If the cut isn't bad, wash it thoroughly and then apply Krazy Glue to seal it. The pain of the cut will stop almost instantly, just like it never happened. If it's much more than skin deep, don't do this.



I was supposed to be taking coumadin or the one on tv that the lawyers are suing about, but I don't. I take about 4 Nattokinase capsules a day. Nattokinase is like a blood conditioner so that blood cells don't clump together.

Anyone here take Effient? That's what I was put on. I have bad ticker for sure.

Prodaxa, people lied and people died. That's what the lawsuits are about. It's about $270 a month for Prodaxa and I couldn't even afford the copay.

YES....GELFOAM!!!! OP and former nurse, my Dad on blood thinners died 2 days after bumping his head. He was taking either warfarin or coumidin, both are poison. Thanks for the suggestion of first aid for them. People: get your family off this stuff! Doctors do not fully realize what seniors may already do to thin their blood naturally, like alcohol and greens. Blood tests may only be checked bi-annually, so any weight loss or cold season temp change or diet change make blood even thinner.

I have been a bit of a bleeder my whole life. Super/Krazy glue has saved my life several times after major trauma and perhaps a couple after minor trauma. I always keep at least a couple tubes in every vehicle and with all of my emergency gear. Styptic pencils/bars are always with me as well.

had some family members on that stuff;
marcumar for my mum as she had a thrombosis - she took it nearly a year, had to inject for some time as well, but the bloodcloth did not dissolve.
so the doc decided to just monitor it, get her off the meds and made her wear a DVT stocking all the time.
for dental surgeries she had to stop taking it 1 day before and wait another day afterwards.

granny got heparin-injections while at hospital; it was quite not funny when once the doc did not connect something at her venous access properly and she lost lots of blood.

natural remedies to stop bleeding would be really good to know, as there are hemophiliacs out there as well!

for those needing blood thinning meds, i would try to switch to natural remedies to not be depending on tablets.
marcumar´s main ingredient is cumin, so if you can tolerate taking cumin naturally, you can stock up on this maybe.

take a look at your nutrition and other meds as well, as they interact and sometimes changing medicamentation will make other meds not nescessary any more!

Sorry about your loss. This is exactly what has freaked me out. I have had nightmares of him going into cardiac arrest again and me having to perform CPR, only causing internal bleeding because of how easy he bruises/bleeds from the blood thinners. I am glad to see these replies. I was starting to think I was paranoid.

Warfarin is the trade name of coumadin, and yes, it's made of rat poison, which is why it's so carefully monitored. It's been around for 60 years so I'd say it's safe for humans when carefully monitored. I've been on it for 10 years. If I cut myself, I don't bleed much so my doseage is perfect for me. People who know nothing about coumadin should not make accusations or predictions.
