Since congress is the only entity that pass legislation into law, how does a librarian write an enforceable law? Is the Librarian a jew? Just curious. This is very odd indeed, and one has to wonder what interest the librarian of congress has with jailbreaking smart phones. I was raised to believe once you bought something, you could do whatever you wanted with it. If it a matter of a contract, don't they all expire eventually? One would HOPE SO!

It's bad enough to buy a good phone outright will run you at least $500 but now if you get one from a carrier you can't unlock it? Looks like people may just opt to get cheap phones they can buy or not get phones at all anymore and just get cheap wifi tablets but then they may ban those too if you use them to talk to people. This is what happens when government destroys the progress and potential of it's people.

Seems like every chance they get they do something that makes it less likely anybody can benefit or grow or improve in any way or even run a business.

Imagine if because of these laws almost entire cities became abandoned because people could not afford it or went elsewhere for a better life. Those lawmakers may be out of a job by their own laws.

The U.S. has the most miserable mobile phone system in the world.

In the rest of the world you can buy an unlocked phone, buy a sim card for whatever carrier you want to use. When you make a call YOU pay for the call. The person receiving the call or SMS pays nothing.

If I understood the PDFs (posted earlier) correctly, then part of this "law" requires the provider to relinquish their 'lock' at the end of the contract. Do I have that right?

I'd consider that an upside. That's not the case with my provider here. I have a perfectly good smart phone that I no longer use. I can only sell it to someone wanting to use the same provider. The phone is contract free. I own it. I paid for it. It should be as easy as going to your local store to unlock it. Actually, no, fuck that - it should be done by the provider AUTOMATICALLY at the conclusion of the contract.

I can understand it from the standpoint that you really aren't 'paying' for the phone when you sign the three year contract. You sign that contract so you can have that new shiny bobble that does lots and lots of things plus links to cat pics for $175 vs. $800 - you shouldn't be able to 'steal' it and hook into another provider.

Still ... the penalties ... these have to be inflated. $500K and/or 5yrs in Jail. Really? Maybe a more appropriate penalty would be being 'banned from owning/using/handling cellular devices' ... lmao ...

I wonder is these same people thought about the boulevard they've just opened up in the consumer cell phone market for the manufacturers?

Sorry there is no positive to this..

1. Most people can NOT afford or even willing to buy a $500 phone (iPhone 5 runs up to almost $1000) (almost everyone I know would not spend that kind of money on a phone)
2. In a majority of cases carriers will NOT unlock THEIR phone, at least that is the way is has been. (in their mind if your purchased it from them and has their logo it's THEIRS)

If the manufacturers can find a way to get their products to the marketplace without having to rely on service provider contracts and restrictions ... maybe those $800 phones might become $400 phones AND maybe the providers would have to rally to get the business.

Wow - all of this outrage because the government wants to make it illegal to alter a product you own. Everyone yells "but I own it/ It's MINE!/ it's my own personal property".

It's sad that there's not this level of focus or concern about the illegalities surrounding altering your shotgun below a specified barrel length or dropping a particular trigger group in to your favorite range toy.

Where are the cries of the public about the right to do as one will with their private property? Does this liberty not apply to the tools of your defense and protection?

I surely don't agree with the law, but are we at such a low state that a cell phone ranks higher in importance than the very tools of securing our freedom? It's no wonder this country is being looked upon as ripe for the picking.
