Re: North Korea 4.9
I always ask this question:

Yes, they want the world to know they are powerful, and it allows them negotiating power.

But, why would North Korea actually deliver a nuclear weapon as a WMD?
I mean, killing thousands of people? It would start a war, no doubt.

The reasoning is always, "Yeah Kim Jung Un is just NUTS, he is crazy, that's why!!!!"

And, that makes no sense, and is not a reason.

Use a nuke as the first salvo in a war of conquest? No, I don't think so. Conquer what, a wasteland?

From South Korea through the DMZ in to NK will be the entry point for a land war in China if ever needed, strategic foothold.

Flash back NK October 6 2006, detonation time just after 10PM eastern, registered 4.2 on the Richter scale.

I think you nailed it Tiger.

This one was a LOT biger. The richter scale is proof. According to what I have read, one full point on the richter scale is 10 times the power. Since this test was about 6 tenths bigger on the scale, it would be 60% bigger than the biggest they blew so far.

All global seismic networks use the moment magnitude scale on wich one point equals 32 more energy release.
The scale is also logarithmic, 4.6 means 8 TIMES the energy release of 4.0.

IMO, they set off their nuke, and a bigger one than before. Their previous bombs have registered lower on the Richter scale, 4.1 and 4.3.
How coincidental that they set off their nuke the same day the Pope resigns?

Oh, yes the Richter scale correct for GLP is 7,0 OK? 5* for you [link to oi45.tinypic.com]

A rule of thumb equivalence from seismology used in the study of nuclear proliferation asserts that a one kiloton nuclear explosion creates a seismic signal with a magnitude of approximately 4.0.

So, if this registered as a ~4.9 to 5.2, the device was definitely more powerful than the officially stated 6-7kt.
It was probably in the range of 24 up to 48kt.
