Is marijuana the 'gateway drug'?

Marijuana it is argued by certain people in power is the gateway drug to harder and more dangerous drugs. This is a fallacy and needs to be addressed. I am neither condoning nor condemning drug use; I am simply trying to use logic and reason to denounce this theory and propaganda. If one were to use the logic behind this theory, then one must explore the early stages of life. When we were young kids, what did our parents give us to shut us up? Sugar. At a young age we became addicted to sugar and we learned to manipulate our parents into giving us our fix by acting up. Sugar was our early introduction into the world of craving and desire. Granted it is not a drug per se, however it holds the power to be destructive and threatens our physical well-being. One only has to look at the rising epidemic of obesity in the western world. Some estimates postulate the obesity rate is from 30 to 40 percent of the general population. The well-known risks associated with obesity are alarming. It is enough for the government to ditch the 'war on drugs' and the 'war on terror' and engage in a battle with the ‘war on obesity.’ Unfortunately, this war would not generate capital for the military industrial complex or security apparatus. More importantly, this war could not serve to justify the erosion of our civil liberties and the expansion of dominance and control over us.
