Oh, I also noticed a "Dr." in front of your name, do you have a PhD, if so, which field, published articles, etc.?

My PhD is in a scientific field, I know what it takes to do good science. Astronomy is my hobby, I am an amateur astronomer, but this does not mean I am not skilled at it. Not only do I know how to determine if 2012 DA14 is a risk to hit us or not, not only did I do so, but I showed everyone here how to do it themselves if they don't believe me.

I believe it won't hit...

But I am sorry, if it were made out of marshmallows or lead would affect the mass and therefore effect the trajectory.

That's actually an interesting question because the keplerian elements are always changing or "osculating" under the effects of the gravity of the various planets, and this encounter will induce a very noticeable change in those elements. With the latest astrometric data we have a much better idea of what that change will be now than we did a year ago when we first found it. With the data we acquire during the encounter we will be able to further refine the orbit far into the future.

Very, very rarely a couple of main belt asteroids go bump in the night. It's only happened a handful of times since we've been watching, out of hundreds of thousands of asteroids.
2. Can we calculate whether or not these asteroids will come close enough to each other to change their orbits?

Farther away from it than the earth.
Where are the gravitational effects calculated at and how accurate can they be ?
 Quoting: AC

Where? My house. NASA. Minor Planet Center. Many other places I'm sure. Any serious software for calculating the orbits and trajectories of asteroids takes into account the gravity of the planets, the sun, etc. FindOrb and ORSA are the two I use the most, and they both do that with extremely precise accuracy. To put it in perspective, I've done ~30 year integrations with ORSA which fell into perfect agreement both with analytical solutions as well as observational data.

a Solar event in the next 36 hours could cause a trajectory shift, no?
 Quoting: AC

No. Asteroids do not blow around at the whims of individual solar events. Even asteroids that haven't been observed for years can still be found right where their orbits predict they should be (provided the orbit determination was well refined before it was last observed) even years later.
How about hitting a screw/junk at (whatever speed)?
 Quoting: AC

Fly meets mack truck. Even better, by the time it gets close enough to potentially hit a screw or piece of space junk, the delta-V required to alter its orbit in such a way as to result in an earth collision reaches impossibly high levels of many km/sec.

I would have to assume when they said it would not hit, they were using the 45m number.

True that they should be updating that with the new size, but have they?

anyone?

if the trend continues...45, 52, 58, 65, etc. with three days to go we could easily find out it's 100m, so they have got to keep re-calcing the gravity effects, but will they tell us the new results?

maybe is a a kilometer or a few and they are just trying to confuse the amateurs til the last minute
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12748895

IMHO the diameter might be somewhere around 110-160 meters but I doubt it would be above 200m, let alone 1 km. tounge

So then if the size is bigger and the original size they said would effect a 750 mile area imagine what a bigger size would effect??
