A distant asteroid is just a point of light in the telescope.
We know where it is, i.e. its distance from the Sun and its distance from us.
We know how bright it appears. We know how reflective the average asteroid is.
This gets you a size estimate that should be correct within 3 orders of magnitude, it's a ballpark figure.
"50 metres" might mean an highly reflective 10 metre object, or a very dark 200 metre object.
If it gets closer you get a lot more data to work with so you can narrow it down much more precisely.

Everybody with a telescope, or a subscription the the MPC Newsletter, can get the data.
Everybody with access to a library can get the "formulas" from books printed long before there was a NASA.

One question arises about this asteroid :

Why did he was discovered in March 2012, when asteroids are estimated to be 4,5 billion years old?

2012 DA14 last year orbital period was calculated to be 368 days.This year is estimated to be 318 days.

So, it is safely to assume that he was passing Earth about 1 time / year or at least 6 times in the last 10 years.

Now, if this year 2012 DA14 passes 17,500 miles off earth, it is logical to assume that last year he also passed very close.And 2 years before also.

Actually, based on current estimates, he passed every year very close to Earth, at least in the last 20 years.

HOW THE HELL THEY DIDN'T FOUND IT 5 years ago? Or 10 years ago?

We are observing the space beween Earth and Moon and we know EVERYTHING that passes in our space !

This not a damn pulsar 10 billion light year away.

It is an asteroid that passed in the last 10 years very close to Earth.

They either know about it for long time, or it's an artificial asteroid.

Occam's Razor favorize that they KNEW about it and HIDE IT!

If the initial trajectory had been worked out for an object assumed to be 47m diameter, and now suddenly they say it is 65m diameter. Surely that will more than double the mass and the calculations would need to be thoroughly reworked?
