That's important advice. Every child should be taught self-reliance. Not only girls but boys, who otherwise might expect "mommy" to wait on them for life.

This is the damage sexism does to humanity: not only are women hollowed out shells of who they might have been, but men are never forced to grow up. People who believe certain groups are inherently inferior will mistreat and oppress them, and that's pretty much the history of our broken world.

So, if a woman never marries, she rules herself.

Good reason to never marry.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31494257

I'd take cats over you anyday. PS I hate cats.

Love the Simpsons. I will never marry. I like being alone.

Women are taught that their self worth is somehow tied to whether they marry and it is complete bs.

Since I have left men alone, I am financially independent and bought me and my two daughters a nice house in the country.

I could have never done that with an anchor around my neck.

Your ignorance is on full display. Is that the best you can do? Are you that ignorant that many women & men have no desire to marry or even engage with the opposite sex. Plus they are perfectly happy with who & choose to use their energy and time playing many other roles in life. Do not limit the Creator in her/his creations.

Look, Why try to justify when you clearly know the bible was rewritten, twisted, eddited, etc etc in favor of patriarchy?

Qumran said they twisted the writings so much so that the jews can maintain control over the non-israelites. There were no differences between man and woman in their scrolls.
There were 12 commandments, not 10.

Since the bible was written in time of patriarchy, no need to waste your time on this little book.

The Bible is the account of God working through people who had largely told him to jump off a cliff, to save the ones who wanted to be reconciled with him. It shows that God is not micromanaging people but allowing them to run the world the way they thought was better than his way. It has great value in explaining who we are, how we got into this mess, and how we can get out.

Why were there no Gentile apostles?

They are mapped to the twelve patriarchs of Israel (see the section of Rev. that describes the New Jerusalem), and this is still BEFORE the Holy Spirit came, before the resurrection, before the cross. They were witnesses to Israel and the will judge the twelve tribes in the future.

If you want male flesh to be significant, then make Jewishness significant as well. Oh, and another requirement is that Jesus taught them personally.

Now run along and play with the other troll.

...
Genesis 18:12
12 Hence Sarah began to laugh inside herself,+ saying: “After I am worn out, shall I really have pleasure, my lord* being old besides?”...

... If a wife and husband are one flesh, but he is the head, she is under him.

... They know their wives better than wives know themselves sometimes because -in the case of my household, my husband is aware he has to take up the slack for things I "can't" do [according to a tacit "understanding" we seem to have], whereas I'm mostly blithely "unaware", as it suits me to be, on a day to day basis. He's like God in this respect- ...
I now believe men need to be respected... If they aren't respected, they will be passive-aggressive or worse.

I do know what you're talking about on thread is mainly '"women not supposed to teach in the congregation", but GLP isn't "the congregation".
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10858311

I agree with much of what you said about the context of Abraham and Sarah. Yet the fact remains that scripture only records her calling him 'lord' ONCE, and defying him several times even in that culture, which is quite remarkable as you showed. This is the bravery Peter referred to that Christian wives of non-Christian husbands are to emulate.

Being "under" someone is something that a "Cornerstone" even does, you know? Jesus is the Cornerstone of the church, holding us all up. This is what he meant by "not so among you... the greatest must become the least"; the true Christian leader "gets under" others and lifts them up. It is support, help, service. So even if someone insists on always taking the "men rule, women drool" approach, even that has its limits. When we read Paul's words about the head as source of the Body, this fits perfectly. The head does nourish the body, but the body holds up the head. It is a picture of unity and interdependence... "each part belongs to all the others". I've said this repeatedly.

As for husbands having some mystical superior knowledge of wives, most men would laugh. There are hundreds of jokes about men not knowing what their wives want or mean. Are women not human? Are women not grown adults? Are women all more stupid and gullible than men? What your personal experience is doesn't prove what's true for everyone, and anecdotal evidence is not proof of anything. Surely there are times when you know something better than he does, and know something about him he cannot see.

Men need love and women need respect. I know that's the opposite of the "Harlequin romance novel" theology going around today, but it's true, because men and women are both equally human. And in Christ, men and women are co-heirs, brothers and sisters, equal parts of one body. "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you'".

But what is most disturbing about your statement is that it places all blame on the wife. She gets all the responsibility but none of the authority, which any competent counselor will tell you is unhealthy and a recipe for disaster. Men must learn to take responsibility for their own sin, and remember that Jesus said, "If YOUR EYE causes you to sin..."

Your last statment... wow. I can't pick a topic? I can't talk about the church? You are arguing that unless we're in a church building, we cannot talk about spiritual things!

gasp
 Quoting: Keep2theCode

First, my last statement.
What I was trying to say was this-
If I'm not mistaken, your main purpose for this thread is to challenge the way some or most have interpreted the Scriptures that seem to say women 'in the congregation', shouldn't teach men 'in the congregation'. I'm saying that even if that is correct, I don't think it applies to what you do here or on a blog, etc., because it's a public forum and not "the Christian Congregation."
I've seen you say that you've gotten into arguments online with male bloggers[?] who were clergymen , recognized Bible scholars, theologians, or things like that, and that you were disappointed at how 'rigid and unwilling to dialogue and to entertain any new idea' they were. My immediate thought was-
John 10:7 Therefore Jesus said again: “Most truly I say to YOU, I am the door+ of the sheep. 8 All those that have come in place of me are thieves and plunderers;+ but the sheep have not listened to them.+ 9 I am the door;+ whoever enters through me will be saved, and he will go in and out and find pasturage.+ 10 The thief+ does not come unless it is to steal and slay and destroy.+ I have come that they might have life and might have it in abundance. 11 I am the fine shepherd;+ the fine shepherd surrenders his soul in behalf of the sheep.+ 12 The hired+ man, who is no shepherd and to whom the sheep do not belong as his own, beholds the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and flees—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them+— 13 because he is a hired+ man and does not care for the sheep.+ 14 I am the fine* shepherd, and I know my sheep+ and my sheep know me,+ 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father;+ and I surrender my soul* in behalf of the sheep.+
- well not that whole thing, but the part about the hired man abandoning the sheep.
You probably agree that many whose 'jobs' are to be religious leaders don't actually have faith. I read, about Bart Ehrman, that many ministers already "know" about Bible -"it's all a fraud", but many question whether ehrman needed to come out with that "info" just yet, as they judge their flocks not ready for "the truth", as they see it.
[I think both they and he are wrong, and every piece of evidence that they're not wrong that I've had presented to me, has so far itself proven to be wrong.]
So if they lack faith, they are not really accountable to a God they don't believe in, and only accountable in a limited way [nine to five-ish, maybe] to their employers, the "dim, fluffy" sheep. So the facade of belief and shepherd-ly avocation, that exacts such a psychic toll, can drop suddenly and and in a manner chilling to behold, when these "hired men" are challenged.
I have to go right now, so on the off-chance I still haven't made any sense:
Yes, as you know, you can choose a topic. And you can talk about spiritual things, anywhere, 'sfar as I'm concerned.
- i hope I get to come back to defend against this hideous "Harlequin" charge, which I knew I left myself open to-

No. What I'm saying is that people twist or misunderstand what the Bible teaches about women. As part of that, I tried very hard to explain that in Christ there is none of the world's hierarchy, none of its prejudices, none of its role playing. And what is meant by "in Christ" is how believers relate to each other, whether in the family or in the larger community of believers. Among ourselves as believers, there is to be no hierarchy. I cannot say it any more plainly than that.

True again, but what does this have to do with anything I've said? I repeated several times that the manner of hierarchy is irrelevant.

"Hideous"? What I find hideous is the idea that so many people think the roles those novels portray is ideal: the knight in shining armor who rescues the helpless damsel in distress. He's supposed to be "Wild At Heart" while she's supposed to be weak, needy, dependent, and obedient. It's the worldly idea of what men are supposed to act like, and how women must never act like. Look at why I said what I did, and tell me how that is different from the average "roles" from romance novels.

And what I was saying about choosing a topic, is that your saying that since this is GLP I can't talk about how things are within the Body of Christ is just plain ridiculous. Maybe even hideous.

Of secondary importance, but I'd like to clarify- Harlequin is hideous, not so much the charge, a charge to which I admitted I'd left myself open.

What planet are you on? Personally, I was born, raised, and continue to dwell in PC world, where any such stereotypes are completely inverted. True, this is a college town, and my parents were flaming, crusading liberals, as was everyone they deigned to know, and we went to a church that was mainly about the civil rights movement and has since become mainly about the gay rights movement, and I'm probably at least 3 or 4 generations removed from any such unseemliness as female submission -if indeed such ever occurred in my family- but don't you watch TV at all? -The ads with the idiot dad, not to mention the rest of it?

No, I DON'T watch TV. What I watch is Christian theology blogs, debates, and scholarship. It is staunchly patriarchal and growing worse by the day. My mission has been to fight un-christian teachings within the Body of Christ, so if anyone knows what's going on in that realm, it's me.

Take a look at this thread; do you see anything like your TV shows here? Even close? Then what is it? Point blank, it's a mad desire to turn back the clock a thousand years to when women were property. The hate drips from their eyes, and it's hatred of women, not men. I can't believe I even have to point this out.

Re: What the Bible Really Says about Women
I notice the canard of "women shall not speak in the assembly" is coming up on this thread.

"So sayeth the law"

This is interesting because nowhere does TORAH say that women should not speak in the assembly. But the Babylonian Talmud (the pharaseic tradition) does.

When Paul says "it is written" he is usually talking about Torah, when he uses the word "says" then he is talking about the oral tradition.

Once more we have problems because the greek word 'nomos' is so vague.

Note the verse following :

1Co 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
1Co 14:35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
1Co 14:36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

Context is everything......

In my translation/commentary I make this point as well: Paul is refuting, not supporting, the silencing of women. You are exactly right that the Mosaic law never silences women. And besides, the same Paul that was hounded the rest of his life for telling Christians they aren't under that law anymore would not turn right around and appeal to it as something Christians are bound to.

Thanks also for bringing up the matter of nomos; this is another instance of "equivocation" on the part of some to make all cases refer to Torah.

Re: What the Bible Really Says about Women
John 5:39 "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;

The bible was not a bible until 400 years after Yahoshua...

sorry, just have to say something about this.

" The Roman Catholic Church claims responsibility for the decision as to which books should be included in the Bible canon, and reference is made to the Council of Carthage (397 C.E.), where a catalog of books was formulated. The opposite is true, however, because the canon, including the list of books making up the Christian Greek Scriptures, was already settled by then, that is, not by the decree of any council, but by the direction of God’s holy spirit—the same spirit that inspired the writing of those books in the first place." -

""""John 5:39 "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;"""

The whole Hebrew Scriptures were about Jesus. That's why he fulfilled the law [and the prophets]. Not a jot or tittle has passed away of the Inspired Hebrew Scriptures, The Canon, because they testify about Jesus and other things vital to understand.

And they are part of the Bible, and say things about women, I hasten to add.

Re: What the Bible Really Says about Women
Here is an inspiring account of what women are accomplishing and suffering for Christ:

Sister Peng pays a high price to be a Christian in China. She has been arrested many times, and she will go to jail again if the police catch her preaching the gospel. Forced to live as a fugitive, she must sneak into her home at night to visit her husband and young daughter.

The first time Peng was taken into custody, just after the Tienanmen Square massacre in Beijing in 1989, she was delivering a fresh shipment of Chinese Bibles to some unregistered pastors. She was thrown into a dirty detention cell and tortured with an electric cattle prod to force a confession of her "crimes." She shivered in that cell for months. Guards offered no coats, blankets or feminine hygiene supplies.

"For eight months I had no contact with anyone. I just ate soup in my cell," Peng told me when I visited China two years ago. "It is really God's mercy that He fed me and kept me warm."

Peng later was transferred to a women's prison, where she spent two lonely years. But during that time she led 32 female inmates to Christ. Upon her release, she immediately resumed her itinerant preaching ministry.

...

One evening after a meeting with these humble Chinese apostles, I returned to my hotel room and discovered two of the female leaders waiting at my door with a translator. "They would like you to pray for them," the translator said.

"Are you pastors or evangelists?" I asked, hoping to better understand their needs.

They smiled and replied, "Yes."

"How many churches do you oversee?" I inquired.

The translator pointed to the woman on the left. "This one oversees 2,000 churches, and this other one oversees 5,000 churches," he said.

I was stunned. Some denominations in the United States are still arguing about whether a woman can stand behind a pulpit, I thought to myself. Meanwhile, women in China are engaging in dangerous missions and governing thousands of new churches. There's something wrong with this picture!
