Minimum wage now $9 an hour!!!!

And ask yourself: What is the lowest you would pay your employees if there were no laws? $1 an hour? Would you maybe buy some slaves so you could have free labor? Do you know your employees'. I'm a Republican and I earn a good living. But I have seen the other side of life and there are areas in this country where pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps is complete garbage.

Back in the 80's I worked minimum wage. I got a few dime raises and the slackers got nothing. Then Congress raised the minimum wage and the slackers were right back with me. My employer raised the price of pizzas to cover it and nobody was better off except people like me being back to earning the same as the slackers.

But I do agree with your last statement. That's what I did. I went back to school and got my ass out of the unskilled labor market treadmill.

You can raise it from $7.25 to $20 an hour if you want. But it won't matter one bit because $20 an hour will suddenly be on the bottom with about the same purchasing power as $7.25 was and with less hiring.

some people are stuck with what they have to support their families and no money to just pack up and go somewhere else.

even at $9.00 you americans are ripped off its no wonder you have the greatest disparity of wealth in the word ....we arent perfect here and many things are more expensive but at least its a much fairer $15.96 (plus penalty rates)and puplic health insurance for all

Why aren't there an abundance of higher paying jobs? It's because government has grown out of control making promises to people they can never keep, all on the public credit card.

Face it, if labor is cheaper somewhere else, like China, jobs will go to China. Eventually most jobs will be run by robots, then there will be no jobs. Are you going to make the government force businesses to use humans instead of robots?

Rich people? Nope, some of us have been there, actually had to live off less than $5 an hour for minimum wage. If the wage goes up the businesses WILL have to raise prices to cover their new costs. Again, it's simple math and the consumer is the one that gets that cost. So while you are a wage earner, you are also a consumer. YOUR prices will go up also and then your $10 an hour doesn't go any further and probably less than your $7.25 and hour now does. When they have a valid reason to raise the prices, they won't just raise just enough to cover their cost, they will raise. more.

If you live in an area where you can't sell your unskilled labor. You either move to a place where you can sell your unskilled labor....or you stop selling unskilled labor and arrange to sell labor that is needed in your area.

What good does raising the price of unskilled labor in an area that apparently does not need it? None. Does raising the price of ice in the Arctic help at all? No.

Your only choice are to increase the demand for unskilled labor or reduce the supply of it. That is the ONLY way to get the price of unskilled labor up.

How do you do that? Well...you can stop the flow of unskilled labor across the border. You can have your lawmakers stop sending unskilled labor jobs overseas. You can educate and train unskilled laborers with skills that are actually in demand. You can encourage business that uses unskilled labor to expand so that they need more unskilled labor.

Arbitrarily raising the price of unneeded unskilled labor...does nada.

now days many other types of jobs are only offering min wage...

i know because i have have been job searching for over two months..

it's not really fair to just put it all on unskilled people, we are just trying to survive in the material world, not trying to take from anyone just trying to take care of our children.

Sure. I understand that I haven't had a job in about 4 years. I lost my home, I'm unemployed and I've just about spent my last dime.

Luckily I do have a roof over my head. But I still don't think people have the right to use government force to mandate how much they make per hour regardless of what they do or how productive they are.

The same laws apply for any labor market. Unskilled or skilled.

If your skill is only pulling minimum wage then that skill is not in demand and there is a supply of that skill that exceeds the demand.

Your choices are...change to sell a skill that is in demand....raise the demand for your skill....decrease the supply of your skill.

It's just the way it works. It can't be avoided. There is no magic wand or decree that can change it. It's Econ 101.

Take action accordingly.

I am in total agreement with you. I am not against you opinion. Less governing the better. That way, "we the people" can take care of it on a local level and keep big gov out of it.

Most people, myself included, start at the bottom when they are young and they work themselves up. They have to do without what they were used to having when they lived with mommy and daddy and start making their own way. They moved out of a nice house, into a cheap apartment. They didn't get a brand new car, they bought what they could afford. I didn't have cable for the first 3 years I lived on my own, yes, that is a shocker, but it can be done. I drove an inexpensive car, I lived in a cheap apartment, I worked two jobs at times and GASP..they were both jobs that I HATED. It was about 6 months on my own before I could even have a phone in my apartment. I had one old couch, my bedroom stuff, I had a few pieces of kitchen things here and there that my mom gave me. I had THREE towels, had to wash them all the time.

I worked, moved myself up, saved my money, didn't have unnecessary things until I could AFFORD it.

That is what normal people do, they don't generally go from the lifestyle of mommy and daddy into that same lifestyle when they leave mommy and daddy. Mommy and daddy worked a lot of years to get to that lifestyle and they started at the bottom also when they were young.

No one shared their wealth with me, I worked to take care of myself. Yes, I know, it's a strange concept, starting at the bottom and working to support yourself and not getting something from others.

Good Lord, we are doomed..share the wealth my ass. Work for your wealth like a normal person.

Prices have and will continue to go up regardless of if minimum wage is increased. Don't fool yourself into believing that because minimum wage is increased that prices will suddenly spike out of control.

Minimum wage is increased BECAUSE prices go up and minimum wave becomes unlivable pay. When that happens, why would anyone even want to work if they can cheat the government? Would you want to work on $7-8 a few years from now after prices have gone up? You wouldn't be able to survive, and SOMEONE has to work those jobs.

well yeah, but in my case i gotta get whatever job i can get and i just cant' take care of my family at 7.25 unless it's full time...

we need to be paid more that's all there is to it, jobs are just going to have to figure it out in their budget so that we can pay our rent and feed ourselves.

That doesn't even make sense, we ARE the consumers. Shop less, shut down the stores, hundreds lose their jobs, the economy then is even worse than it is today.

I made Pizza and stuff too in the 80's :)
They were really nice to me and wanted me to eat (italians are great with that) and I did, teenage boys need enormous amounts of food. I appreciated that and worked hard for them. I probably ate more in food (delicious!) than got paid in money. "Eat, eat, you are too skinny! Manja! Enjoy!" They were real sweethearts and so were the waitresses :)

And I appreciate what your saying, I'm not saying don't raise the rate but I'm saying we have a problem, I mean the whole human race; of using those less fortunate while a few get rediculously rich. We need to change that so everyone can at least be comfortable and have enough to eat and a warm bed and not live in perpetual debt.

I know, I'm an idealist but whats wrong with that? We should all demand it and I mean for the Chinese too!

This is true but there are other ways the business could offset the rise in the cost of labor. Specifically, I am talking about the business owners taking a hit. I understand the economics of it. And I am also talking about morals and ethics. Bad times seem to always be passed on to the employees.

For example, if you are a sole-proprietor and you are sucking out $100,000 a year for your income; then you should take the hit in bad times because it was most likely due to the business owner's decisions. Why should all the employees suffer? Maybe the owner could only take $50,000 a year instead of $100,000, then take the rest and keep the employees at the same hours and pay.

Or when a CEO runs a company into the ground and makes 2000% what an entry level employee makes. How could any decent human being sleep at night after doing that?

I am talking about being a good person and taking responsibility for your decisions instead of having no consequence or even getting rewarded when people suffer. That is what is wrong with our culture and society.
