Demon...look at the wall, words are appearing, faces, huge man in a blanket, attractive woman, "Lying, Lying, Dog, Yeti, Jail." Thats all I could make out.

i read a book years ago about a poltergiest haunting a house in England. That one used to knock as well. Apparently knocking is a typical manifestation of them. Usually poltergiests appear around kids just going into puberty for whatever reason.
I don't know if this one is real or not but I do believe that poltergiests occur, around people with natural energetic skills of one kind or another. It sounds rather coherent for a poltergeist but hey, maybe they are evolving LOL.

If he has an upstairs apartment, since many are built with a concrete firewall between their Apartments and the ones below as many often are, there has to be sewage vent pipes and hot water vent pipes going up to the roof from the apartment below.

If I had to guess a reasonable reason for the banging maybe one of the vent pipes has a broken clamp that keeps them still.

Otherwise, they have ghosties.
