"No matter how exotic human civilization becomes, no matter the developments of life and society nor the complexity of the machine/human interface, there always come interludes of lonely power when the course of humankind, depends upon the relatively simple actions of single individuals." ~Tleilaxu Godbuk |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 34304944 Australia 02/13/2013 01:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It will be interesting to see what the paper is like and how seriously it is taken by the scientific community. If it is any good, it will be taken seroiusly, if it isn't then it won't. You can't tell without reading the paper whether they had good protocols in their studies or not and contamination is a big issue in DNA studies. Without an actual body to back this up, they are going to have a hard time showing that the results aren't a product of contamination, I think. They say that the DNA doesn't match any known ancient hominins, which therefore excludes neanderthals, becuase their genome has been sequenced. That leaves perhaps Homo erectus. However, without a body it wil be a tough case to convince people of. Let's see how good the paper is. |

If this is legit, this has serious implications. Quoting: Mr. Rogers 2.0 34268151 iff it's legit. Photos can be faked very easily these days. Only a body will really shift the mood on it OR if the DNA evidence is exceptional and I am keeping an open mind about it but likelihood will be that it doesn't pan out. The reason for that would be, for me, that no body has been produced. If they have 110 samples surely a body would have turned up. I could see a vague possibility that Homo sapiens could have bred with Homo erectus and carried their DNA into a subpopulation of hybrids, because Homo erectus might have survived in a pocket in Asia up to 60,000 years ago when the sapiens got out of Africa and interbreeding might have been viable. But to be honest that theory is really pushing it. There isn't another one that would work because other than Neanderthals there isn't any other hominin species that could fit the bill and it's not Neandethals according to them. I would bet on it not panning out, but it would be cool if it did... more to learn about in our history. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 34314942 Australia 02/13/2013 07:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OK I just had a look around, and it appears that the journal that the paper is being published in is simply a brand new website set up by Ketchum herself and called a "scientific journal" presumably for effect. "Here's the official press release brought to you by DeNovo Journal of Science, a Science Journal website created Dr. Melba Ketchum" [link to bigfootevidence.blogspot.com.au] they have left out the "by" here in the sentence. I understand that it's probably hard for her to get printed because of the subject matter, but to present it like it's being published in some kind of independent journal with no conflict of interest looks to be a bit .. not how it is. [link to www.denovojournal.com] The website itself doesn't have details of who runs it on site, which isn't kosher in itself.. all journals have these things up so you can see whose behind the scenes there. So if it's a peer reviewed journal... who exactly are the peers doing the reviewing? Can anyone review it? |

This journal isn't even listed on my universities journal data base. There are plenty on the list that the uni doesn't subscribe to, but this one isn't even listed. ?????? If this article is already published then it should be available to purchase or be accessed by those with subscription... however... I can find no such access. anyone? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 34314942 Australia 02/13/2013 08:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Only very limited reference to this journal appears online one mention is here: [link to zoobank.org] However, if you go to their link to where the archives should be [link to www.hathitrust.org] that whole library give NO RESULTS for Ketchem, her paper, or the journal, at all. Nor does my uni library have access to the journal or even have it listed to begin with. Basically I can't see much evidence for the journal itself let alone the paper having been printed in it. If it is printed it should be accessible, either for money and subscription and/or through a research university's library e-journal collection. If anyone has further info on this as to where this journal can be accessed, where it's archives are and where Ketchum's paper can be accessed from, that would be cool. other than that.. I'm pretty much looking at this like wtf. I deal with journals a fair bit and look up articles all the time... and shit is just not hidden like this... and it's not this hard to find... I don't get it.. something just aint' right with it. |

Or consult a reel of toilet paper. Because this whole thing is really starting to look like some Grade A. Bovis stercus... mmmhmm yes sir. Or I could be wrong, and the paper could have actual merit to it. I hope the latter. |
Mr. Rogers 2.0 (OP) User ID: 34268151 United States 02/13/2013 08:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't know... Too many samples involved, too many studies here to just brush aside. I want to read the entire paper, and raw data. Then I can make up my mind. I believe Sasquatch is real, so I remain open minded here. Even optimistic that some ground breaking data is presented here. The World's a big place. |

A James Randi or a Melba Ketchum to tell us that. Don't believe any of them, just believe your five senses and gut instincts. By the way I checked Ketchum's face book, her journal is now "live" if you want to download it...... FOR a discount rate of only $29.99 A POP. Anonymous Coward User ID: 34314942 Australia 02/13/2013 09:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | well it DOES matter, because if the evidence is real then it would be dealt with by mainstream academia. AND the researchers in this case are presenting it like it has been or will be printed in a peer reviewed journal, like a real science journal, and I just can't see any evidence for that being the case. I know that there would be a lot of scientists very interested in this kind of data. It doesn't "go against our theories therefore we won't acknowledge it".. not at all. I can think of a theory that might cover it as I explained in previous posts. Heaps of scientists would be extremely interested in it and finding out what it is and what it means. People like to present scientists as general fuckwits bent on being blind to the truth "to protect their worldview" or of lying... well NEWS FLASH they are just regular people and just as many are open minded as there are open minded people in any frikking field. But unless there is a good paper and good data behind it, it won't get anywhere. Without a body as well, ... that's going to be hard. But if the DNA evidence is strong enough that should be enough... but I'm not going to hold my breath. |
