Why do so many places get ready for a "zombie attack" if it is supposedly nearly impossible for it to happen?
The only feasible scenario in my mind is a MASSIVE amount of infected people, and the infection must be highly, highly contagious, not just through bites but through coughing and any kind of airborne contact.
The "zombies" must also act like humans, and think, but only try to kill in any way they can. Not like the movies where they lumber towards you with bad reaction time.
28 days later still wouldn't cut it, the zombies would have to start from a large pool of infected (enough to overrun cities and lots of armed civilians)

(rabies variation).As I believe we are moving away from "zombies" being a fictional comic book character and into more of an understanding of the effects of viruses and other biological agents on the human body, my $0.02 is related to something along these lines. Now that we can identify, isolate, and even alter biologicals, there seems no reason that we cannot also begin to understand the potential ramifications of such.
Rabies (which is a virus) has three (3) stages of progression as the infection matures, with the final one being defined as RAGE - the condition mostly associated with unwarranted/ out of character animal attacks.
A mutation of the Rabies Virus that combined with something along the lines of Meningitis (which can be bacterial OR viral), particularly Spinal Meningitis, would be a fairly easily transferable, highly infectious, and fairly quickly acting affliction that would target and affect the brain and neurological system.
From a religious/ spiritual perspective:
We must absolutely be aware of demonic possession. I do believe as we continue to head into the latter days of time on this earth that demonic possession will become not only more prevalent, but also much more evident.
As agents of Satan, a demon's entire mission is to prevent others from coming to know Christ; whether that means placing stumbling block in front of those sharing the message, or preventing those who don't know Christ from receiving the message and making the decision determining their eternity. This can be most any action imaginable - even killing - in order to prevent the continued spreading of God's Word.
Now, could a demon utilize a body that is already infected with the above-mentioned mutated virus? Absolutely - there would be no sound mind present to ward off/ make conscious decisions to thwart the presence and proliferation of said demon(s). Could demonic/ satanic influences contribute to the spread of any such mutated virus in order create more vehicles for more possessions? Again, I do believe so.
There are many implications from that above scenarios - especially should they combine - but maybe that's better for another thread.
As a weapon:
Lastly, we (or at least I) can also imagine the creation such virus in weaponized form. This would create havoc within a population on which it was applied or exposed, essentially creating a situation where an enemy would not have to be engaged directly, as any such recipient enemy would essentially destroy themselves from within. The creation of a "zombie" weapon also carries many implications on both sides of the fence.
