I have developed a much greater respect for their intelligence, and as a result my communication with them has improved greatly. They have a very rich emotional life that they deeply enjoy sharing with me. Two of them smile, and know what kind of smile is appropriate for different occasions. One in particular is adept at responding with appropriate smiles, and has a real sense of humor. When he misses some treat I have tossed to him, and one of the other dogs gets it, he clearly laughs at himself. He obviously can appreciate the humor of his own mistake. Many dog partners (owners isn't the right word - you don't refer to "owning" your children) understand these things. I am often amused by how far "science" lags behind reality. It is funny to see over-trained and data-blind scientists diligently studying something that a more intuitively aware person just simply "gets". LOL |

I agree, there is more going on than people give them credit for if you pay attention. It is a pity that there are people out there who can't or won't understand just what a gift dogs are. |

Of all of "man's best friends" , only a very tiny percentage get to live a good life on this hell called "Earth." |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26023511 So dogs are sold in packs? How many in a pack? Does Wal-Mart sell dog packs? Are they assorted dogs or just one variety? Are they ready made or do you need to just-add-water ... and feed them. I might head out to my local Wal-Mutt and see if they have any. |

And I consign to hell those who would treat our friends that way. I don't say much on this because I know there are many people without souls or anything approaching compassion and decency. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38560420 Kinda like politicians Dead right. Actually I think if dogs could speak they'd turn out to be a lot more intelligent than most politicians! |

Quoting: Rabid Wolf :smilewolf: Dead right they do. I have several dogs. Like races of people some breeds seem more intelligent than others. My labrador will sit outside the door for ages quietly waiting for someone to let her in. My collie has separate barks for different things - if she wants me to open the door she'll give two short barks followed by one single one - she also does this if she spots the dumb labrador waiting outside the door! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5276386 United States 06/14/2013 07:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My Malamutes straight TALK. They have about at least a 10 word vocabulary that I know for certain what their talking about. Anyone that spends allotta time with their dogs can confirm this. Also, dogs are the only animal smart enough to know what it means when a human points at something- not even chimps can make that connection. |
spine monkey User ID: 39475233 United States 06/14/2013 09:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am learning to talk with my dogs. I will sometimes say to the older one, "Marnie, where's Beckett?? Where is he? Where? Call him. Call Beckett. Woof woof." She will then bark and go off to find her younger playmate, though sometimes she will get up, go to the end of the porch, and bark until he answers and comes. |

Dogs and cats and birds always try to communicate with humans. Nothing new. A red bird knows how other red birds sound. Other communicate with scent. |
spine monkey User ID: 39475233 United States 06/14/2013 09:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Marnie is a true mutt: DNA results from the vet show she is part Swedish Vallhund, Norwegian Elk Hound, Harrier and American Foxhound. She is smart as a whip. Knows when you are pointing to things, will know to go upstairs and look for my daughters when I ask her to, etc. The other one is half Plott Hound and half English Cocker Spaniel, or so the DNA tests say. He is strong, big, beautiful and . . . pretty darned dumb. But he will let you pick up all 70lbs of him like a rag doll and let you treat him like a little toy. |
