Dogs have a secret bark language
However, more recent research indicates that there might be more to barking than we first thought. Dogs have fairly plastic vocal cords, or a “modifiable vocal tract.” Dogs might be able to subtly alter their voices to produce a wide variety of different sounds that could have different meanings. Dogs might even be altering their voices in ways that are clear to other dogs but not to humans. When scientists have taken spectrograms, or pictures, of dog barks, it turns out that not all barks are the same—even from the same dog. Depending on the context, a dog’s barks can vary in timing, pitch, and amplitude. Perhaps they have different meanings.

I enjoyed the link, including the reader comments (at the other site):

Because I have been increasingly paying attention to what these dogs are doing and thinking, and how they react to one another and to me, I am very aware that their awareness is far more complex than I had suspected. I have developed a much greater respect for their intelligence, and as a result my communication with them has improved greatly. They have a very rich emotional life that they deeply enjoy sharing with me.

Two of them smile, and know what kind of smile is appropriate for different occasions. One in particular is adept at responding with appropriate smiles, and has a real sense of humor. When he misses some treat I have tossed to him, and one of the other dogs gets it, he clearly laughs at himself. He obviously can appreciate the humor of his own mistake.

Many dog partners (owners isn't the right word - you don't refer to "owning" your children) understand these things. I am often amused by how far "science" lags behind reality. It is funny to see over-trained and data-blind scientists diligently studying something that a more intuitively aware person just simply "gets".

Re: Dogs have a secret bark language
I own my dogs, my cats... less so. The dogs have a fairly large vocab. I'd say between 50 and 100 "words" and or "inflections". I have 4 dogs, Katahula types with naturally docked tails and glass eyes. We live in a rural area where houses are a least a hundred yards apart or much more. The dogs are on 6 acres. There are horses, chickens and cats etc.. You should see the dogs walk gently around the roaming chickens so as not to startle them. The dogs communicate with each other across the property with amazing complexity. They also communicate with the dogs next door(150yrds)that they can see and with 6 or 7 sets of other dogs they "talk" to at night. They know these dogs well but have never and will never see them. They also communicate with the coyotes about once a night or so. Chickens also communicate a great deal and have a vocab of only about 10 or so words but they hear and listen well.

good post. I agree, there is more going on than people give them credit for if you pay attention. It is a pity that there are people out there who can't or won't understand just what a gift dogs are.

It's also a pity that the vast majority of Demon Apes (humans) on this planets would just as soon eat a dog or torture it to death for "fun" , rather than love and care for one.

Of all of "man's best friends" , only a very tiny percentage get to live a good life on this hell called "Earth."

So dogs are sold in packs? How many in a pack?
Does Wal-Mart sell dog packs?
Are they assorted dogs or just one variety?
Are they ready made or do you need to just-add-water ... and feed them.

I might head out to my local Wal-Mutt and see if they have any.

Yes, I am very aware of that. And I consign to hell those who would treat our friends that way. I don't say much on this because I know there are many people without souls or anything approaching compassion and decency.

Dead right. Actually I think if dogs could speak they'd turn out to be a lot more intelligent than most politicians!

Dead right they do. I have several dogs. Like races of people some breeds seem more intelligent than others. My labrador will sit outside the door for ages quietly waiting for someone to let her in. My collie has separate barks for different things - if she wants me to open the door she'll give two short barks followed by one single one - she also does this if she spots the dumb labrador waiting outside the door!

Re: Dogs have a secret bark language
My Malamutes straight TALK. They have about at least a 10 word vocabulary that I know for certain what their talking about. Anyone that spends allotta time with their dogs can confirm this. Also, dogs are the only animal smart enough to know what it means when a human points at something- not even chimps can make that connection.

Re: Dogs have a secret bark language
I am learning to talk with my dogs. I will sometimes say to the older one, "Marnie, where's Beckett?? Where is he? Where? Call him. Call Beckett. Woof woof."

She will then bark and go off to find her younger playmate, though sometimes she will get up, go to the end of the porch, and bark until he answers and comes.

All animals can communicate with others of their kind.

Birds chirp and call.

Cats meow. Frogs croak. Dogs bark. Wolves howl.

Dogs and cats and birds always try to communicate with humans.

Nothing new.

A red bird knows how other red birds sound.

Other communicate with scent.

Re: Dogs have a secret bark language
Marnie is a true mutt: DNA results from the vet show she is part Swedish Vallhund, Norwegian Elk Hound, Harrier and American Foxhound. She is smart as a whip. Knows when you are pointing to things, will know to go upstairs and look for my daughters when I ask her to, etc.

The other one is half Plott Hound and half English Cocker Spaniel, or so the DNA tests say. He is strong, big, beautiful and . . . pretty darned dumb. But he will let you pick up all 70lbs of him like a rag doll and let you treat him like a little toy.
