Skunked dog... hydrogen peroxide ?
I read in another thread where a mix of HP and baking soda will work on de-skunking.
My dog has dark short hair like a doberman, he's a mix...
Will this solution bleach out his hair?

Yes, hydrogen peroxide works great! We live in the country and have used it often.

Tomato juice makes a nasty mess.

I used to be a vet tech, the best mix is some dawn dish soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

1. mix it til its a nice paste
2. pre-wash dog with reg shampoo and rinse
3. now use this paste and lather in coat
4. let sit for 15 minutes
5. rinse and enjoy your non smelly dog.

btw, there may be a slight hint of the odor left but it will be gone a a couple days.

Yep, peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap. The tomato juice legend is a myth and a mess. Peroxide won't affect the color, just be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Our German Shepherd mix just loves skunks and wants to be their friend.. and also doesn't seem to mind the smell. Ick.

thx all... heading to the store.

He's a hunter/killer... I keep him on a line 99% of the time I let him out. Every now and then, late at night I let him romp loose for 5-10 minutes... he get's it out of his system and comes right back.

Not any more... I'm hating life right now but his is worse all skunked in the cold garage.

Go buy giant cans of tomato sauce at the store like 5 really big ones, the REALLY big ones like for resteraunts, fill the tub with the tomato sauce, add water to cover the dog and sit in the soup for an hour or so and no more stinky dog.

The peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap is best.

One of my dogs got sprayed Sunday night. No trace of smell left.

I also wanted to mention it seems here lately I've been hearing about a lot of dogs getting skunked. I wonder if it has anything to do with the time of year. Skunks looking for food closer to homes type thing.

If that dawn-peroxide remedy doesn't work, this Nature's Miracle product worked very well for my friend whose long-haired german shepherd was sprayed (talk about disaster!):

Probably hunting closer to homes for food. All the skunks up here hibernate for the winter, so we can breathe a sigh of relief for a few months. We have a couple neighborhood skunks who like to munch off our compost bin.

LOL... I've also heard that Prell shampoo works on it's own, so I have a stash of hydrogen peroxide, Baking soda and Dawn AND Prell in the house as well as in the garage (in case it's me who gets skunked).

This recipe also eliminates cat piss odor, which is a similar mix of oils and enzymes, designed to stink and last a long time.

Gwad I wish people would stop saying tomato juice... oh, and the one who said use tomato juice and leave your dog in it for an hour... what a stupid thing to day/do!
