6,000 children have DNA taken by Police (150,000 total)
This is old, sort of; so I'm not sure if anyone's covered it before.

It began last year, saw newspapers saying childrens DNA were taken ( [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] At the time I didn't think much of it. Just last week my local shop had a newspaper which said 'Police take 6000 childrens DNA'. Again, I didn't think much of it.

Decided to google a bit today and here's what I found: Protection of freedom act (2012) meant thousands of innocent people would have their DNA data removed from police Databases (give this a quick read: [link to www.genewatch.org]
Great, this is what we want right?

That act was implemented last year...

Here's the news from last Thursday/Friday: [link to www.birminghampost.net]

If you dont want to read it all I'll simply it for you here:

6,000 children have their DNA taken by the police.
3,349 youths between the ages of 10 and 17 in 2010
2,436 in 2011

456 between 10/11 years old.

35 were taken from ten-year-olds.
137 from 11-year-olds.
284 from 12-year-olds.
627 from 13-year-olds.
957 from 14-year-olds.
1,212 from 15-year-olds.
1,273 from 16-year-olds.
1,260 from 17-year-olds.

“Police have the power and a legal requirement to take DNA, but do not do so for children aged under 10.” - Richard Meffen, head of the force’s Forensic Services Unit. <--- This means children under 10 can have their DNA taken/stored by the Police.

Last but not least: Records still remain on the Police National Database as the Bill (2012 Freedom/Protection act) does not require these records to be deleted if a person is innocent, and can be kept to the age of 100.

Liberal Democrats said a few years ago that 150,000 children have their DNA stored by Police.
