Linux is AWESOME!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this operating system!!

I went with the big deal first, (Linux Mint) but I didn't like it much to be honest. It had crash issues on my computer, the graphics were messed up a little here and there and I just didn't care for the whole look of it.

I was almost ready to give up and go back to Windows and came across a version of Linux called OpenSuse.

O.M.G.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Much nicer in appearance than Mint and it hasn't crashed on me a single time in the week that I've had it.

I mean this layout is bad ass and the different things you can do with graphics and customizing your desktop are sweet. It runs VERY close to how Windows runs too so you don't have to learn a whole new skill set to get started.

If you're on the fence about Linux, trust me, they have fixed the issues, go for it. You won't regret it. It has no backdoors like Windows does, it's ENCRYPTED, it is ENTIRELY open source which means others can add to it and make it better. You really can't ask for anything more, Linux is the shit.

And it's FREE!! 5a

I have the newest version of OpenSuse, 12.2 with the KDE desktop. If you don't know what that means, like me, it's no problem, the OpenSuse website guides you every step of the way and allows you to choose which desktop you run.

Download the file, burn the image to a DVD and you're done.

I also love being able to keep my Windows with it and I have a choice which one I want to use before the computer boots up.

One thing I have noticed is that Linux doesn't support blueray/HD 1080p, so I keep a copy of Windows on my hard drive that I use solely for that. On the other hand Linux plays streaming HD content MUCH better than the other so I go to OpenSuse for that and general everyday surfing etc.

AMAZING!

If you want to get started, I can help with the setup and questions.

Another feature I love is that it updates or fixes every issue on your computer with one push of a button in online updates.

It scans your PC , tells you what's needed and downloads and installs everything you need automatically. No more surfing, looking for download spots, possibly getting one with viruses or malware in it. It's all done from your desktop and goes to reliable, 100% proven safe sources.

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
I was setting up Windows the other day and it took me 6 hours to get everything the way I needed it. (codecs, programs, security, etc.)

Messing with this, tweaking that. UGH.

Went to OpenSuse and everything is already there with the OS.

And I mean everything.

Torrent client, CD/DVD burning software, media players, an onboard software store, Firefox, widgets, apps and anything else you may need.

Took me about 30 minutes to set it all up.

I've read it's more of a codec issue than actually being able to play them.

Some of the HD quality is lost, or at least that's what I've gathered.

yeah i had that version too and loved it, but ofcourse i fucked it up because of a firmware issue on my SSD disk, so i had to flash the ssd disk because it froze ever hour after it had been running 3000 hours or something like that (its the producers fault), i didnt figure that out before i had formatted the disk and installed linux mint where the same happened, googled and found out this issue with my ssd .. which angers me cause i really liked opensuse

but linux mint with cinnamon runs fine here, and its easier to find and install software for it because of the .deb system

what version i run dont really matter that much to me, both opensuse, ubuntu and linux mint are great to try out for new users

i hope steam makes more games for linux so we have a descent gaming platform, then i think it will get more used ahead

dude, its not that big of a difference, if it runs smooth on your computer just stick to mint

you have KDE as "standard" looks in opensuse, i do love the looks of it though... but you can get that for mint aswell

id generally prefer having mint instead, because its ubuntu based, and since its allmost "standard" it is easier regarding software

Go to their website and download their DVD image (4.3 GB), burn it to disk and set your comp to run the disk first instead of booting from the hard drive. The installation will walk you through the rest.

I believe it also will give you an option to either run next to Mint or write over it completely.

There are ways to save your personal things as well. When I got rid of Windows it was FULL of my personally downloaded things. GIGS of it. lol

I said screw it and started over.

Steam is on Linux now (Ubuntu based distros).

Also, WINE handles most DDX issues. :)

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
If you REALLY want to dive into and fully understand and learn Linux AND get the MOST out of it use Arch Linux.

It's not as easy because you do things manually when you install it but you learn a lot of important things about Linux and how it works.

With Arch Linux you also are able to get the latest version of softwares a lot easier as well.

GET SAVED: Thread: Are you SAVED from DAMNATION?

"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." -- Galatians 5:14-26

OpenSuse has a setting specifically for playing games.

Or, just run Wine.

It is a Windows emulator and will mount and run most Windows programs on Linux. Also check out playonlinux.
