Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
you have programs that can do the same as your adobe or whatever but if you really think you NEED to use those then they also run without any problems - I tried them
 Quoting: Lupus

I can verify this. I recently did a 1-minute HD animation that was equal parts Blender/Photoshop/After Effects. My system's only got 3 gigs of RAM but it wasn't *much* of a problem (some slowdown because of ridiculous file sizes near the end lol). Again, for those following along at home, that was NOT through WINE but a VM running Windows. WINE is really nice but I've had some problems with the Adobe suite and it's not that hard to run a nice VM and keep it simple :)

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
the thing is
you say there is no driver or software support..
its not true
you have drivers in any out of the box linux installed - you dont have to install em
you can install additional but it all works fine with generic

games and programs run
I played everything from WoW to Skyrim on my linux without any problem
and modern machines can handle VM and Wine

you have programs that can do the same as your adobe or whatever but if you really think you NEED to use those then they also run without any problems - I tried them

I know a lot of ppl who think the way you do - I showed my few friends on my or their own machines that it works and they now either run dual OS or some even switch to linux

we have 2013 - the MS dominating desktop market is only due to the lack of knowledge
 Quoting: Lupus

Maybe there are some glitches and bugs, maybe there are some minor (or even major) problems but - belive me or not - I have never experience anything that would support this whole antilinux BS
well, maybe Im just lucky or never used such soft

I see that dingbat came back. Hey, if all he is comfortable with is Windows or Mac, then that is all he is capable of. He's obviously the kind of person who demands everyone think exactly the same as he does to help validate his own inabilities. He clearly knows next to nothing about computers, so don't bother taking him too seriously. It's like some random asshole disagreeing with a medical decision - thanks, but leave that to the people who actually know what they are talking about. Case in point - " It's considered more secure for its scarcity in the Internet world". No, it's actually quite prevalent in the internet world, what do you think 90% of web hosting occurs on (along with FreeBSD)? It's more secure because until just recently, Microsoft still couldn't figure out that you needed to separate system files from user files. Not to mention "Linux is great for people looking for basic computing". Really...and how many supercomputers run Windows lol? It's obvious this dude is one of those poorly educated "experts" who makes us all look bad :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36452782

That was in reference to end users -- obviously. I would recommend Ubuntu for grandma. My arguments for not using Linux were quite clear. There's a lack of driver support, lack of software support, and a lack of PC gaming support.

This is going to be heartbreaking, I'm going to say it anyway, most software for Linux is really unpolished -- granted, it's free and independently made.

WINE is far from perfect, and running virtual machines for resource intensive software is just stupid. I will admit Maya runs natively in Linux, and that's pretty cool, now Adobe, Discreet, and every game developer... Linux has come very far, I mean very far. It can literally be installed easier than Windows at this point.

In the future, the speed of computers will nullify the lack of performance in virtual machines, making this entire argument meaningless. At that point, it just won't matter. What will come first, support or processing power? Maybe they'll both come at the same time.

It doesn't come down to difficulty, if comes down to reality. If you want to sit on your toilet seat to get everything working just the way you want it, great. Most people don't want to live that way. If you're an awesome programmer, great. You can, for free, sit on your toilet seat and program your own drivers, and absolutely go nowhere.

Your post is out of anger, and it shows for the lack of ignoring details, like the fact I wrote that it was good for servers. Your post ignores that all together, because you point out "what do you think 90% of web hosting occurs on (along with FreeBSD)?"
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37220109

See how much easier that would have been to start with, rather than the "I'm awesome, admit it" posts? This last post shows an inherent understanding of the arguments you put forth and gives us a good ground for logical discussion. I had given up because your previous posts were light on info, high on ego, and we've all seen plenty of that elsewhere on the web. I look forward to debating you a little further now - but I currently have to root out some bizzaro problem happening with a friend's hosting platform...so I will return when once again I can procrastinate for a few minutes lol..

All awesome until you have to recompile your own binaries and configure your firewall blah blah blah.

Just get a Mac and have the best of both worlds (things just work and you still get a unix command line).

So am I. It's based on BSD, actually, one of the more secure distros of unix. Do some research to counteract your blind, ignorant zeal. There's a reason why everyone you see at tech conferences and most startups in silicon valley, for example, have them. Maybe also because they can afford them because they are smart and have good jobs...

Computers are about usability and having everything just work, so you can work (or play). An OS should get out of your way, like the Mac OS. It shouldn't constantly require you to recompile drivers, packages, and kernels (like Linux), or trouble you with malware and virus laden bloatware like windows.

Now that is a laugh, ya joker...

microshit windoze is made by people for money. it is quite difference, unfortunatelly i have dualboot, that shit is needed for gaming and some applications like 3d graphics software (anything using directx instead opengl and/or using those libraries like .net)

It is obvious to me that all of the Linux Bashers here don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Modern distros like Mint, Magiea, OpenSusue, Ubuntu, are all totally functional 'out of the box'. The only caveat is that some require an extra step to enable propritiatary software like flash-player and some wi-fi drivers, but it is a one click operation to acknowledge that you want to incorporate 'non-free' licensed software on your system.

The people here trashing Linux are teenage gamer twats and idiots who spent a fortune on Micro$oft Certifications.

As for "get a Mac" crowd: APPL is a Corporate Shitbag of a company that not only exploits it's workers overseas, but worst of all, seeks to COMMODOITIZE it's users by tracking every keystroke, controlling access to media (iTunes and DRM), and selling your personal information to any advertiser or agency that will pay for it.

There is no privacy in AppleLand - only vastly overpriced spy machines for hipster douchebags.

you do realize that the gnu ecosystem devastated the free (as in free of charge, and open) software movement, due to the popularity of linux?

don't get me wrong: i like gnu license, because it is viral and forces inheritary open code.

but before linux, there were decades of vast ecosystems of both public and proprietary operating systems, which all worked together because of the posix specifications. in short: interoperability was a given thing, protocols were being adhered to, and source code could be compiled on any posix-compliant system. the rise of linux fucked all that over, and became a closed-minded single-minded mess where only linux was important and everything else could fuck jolly well off.

90% of linux users only use linux because they think it makes them elite. The other 10% just use it because they couldnt figure out how to do something in windows that they were used to doing in linux. People act like theres no command line or encryption capabilities with windows wtf
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3317700

Most of the Linux users that I've known have been old school hackers who just want to know every little detail about how their machine is working. As has already been mentioned by another poster, it used to be that your OS came with a huge manual that you would need to at least peruse before you had any hope of doing anything much with your machine. Now many will say that computers have become easier to use and more mainstream since then and that there is no need for that mindset now but the fact is that these people built (yeah, built, not bought)their computers because they already had that mindset, they didn't adopt that mindset in order to be able to use a computer. For the current generation of computer users who just want to check out what their inane Facefuck friends are posting or tweet about how much they heart Justin Bieber Windoze is fine and Linux is just too much like having a brain but any serious computer enthusiast has at least tried a few Linux distros and those hardcore hacker types are running LFS boxes.

With one gig of memory, what Linus flavor would you recommend that I try on the Macbook?

I have a 2.1 macbook that the OS cannot be upgraded to OS Lion.
With one gig of memory, what Linus flavor would you recommend that I try on the Macbook?
I am not going to by a new laptop, even though this one is 6 years old, it is still a solid laptop

Which one(s) would you suggest?

doesn't matter a lot. one gig of ram should be plenty. just make sure your desktop environment (the graphical user interface, with all bells and whistles) doesn't eat up most of that memory. if you want to save ram, use a lightweight desktop environment (like xfce), or use only a bareboned window manager (like fluxbox)...

I suggest xfce (im using it) since Fluxbox can be difficult for new linux users. Xfce and Lxde (I dont recommend it due to few bugs) are perfect for older machines.

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
Lol ya frickin nerd nazi, no. BSD is a unix distribution, or, to use another term so as to not confuse you further, a derivative. It is actually even called a distribution. In the goddamned title:
"Berkeley Software Distribution"
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Now who is the clueless zealot? Dumbass.

you. you're playing with semantics. ask any bsd developper how his favourite distro is doing, and he or she will proverbially bash your skull in.

distro is a linux thing.

Lol... Re-read my post... You are the one playing with semantics trying to take ownership of the word "distro". Grow up.

If it is older (g4-g5) then it is a ppc processor. in that case, yellowdog linux is great. Debian also does ppc compiled images. Check out distrowatch.com and search ppc compatible distros.

if it is a newer mac with an intel processor any modern distro will work.

Rock on Linux!

'berkeley software distribution' has been discontinued since 1995. no other software ecosystem used the term "distribution", apart from linux - which is not a derative.
